If you're in the market for a new desk, maybe you should look around the house first before heading out to purchase one. You might be surprised at what you find. Furniture is so easy to manipulate into whatever you want and often it's pretty simple. Have an old bookshelf you're no longer interested in keeping? Transform it into a desk.
Dave had an old IKEA bookshelf in his home that he just didn't like anymore. Instead of doing what we all would typically do (throw it out), he got creative and thought he could transform it into a desk. Here's what he did for his IKEA Hacker project:
First disassembled the shelf and gathered together the pieces he was going to use, then took a trip to his local hardware store and got creative. He knew it was going to be a layered desk so he was looking for supports to place beneath the top layer. Initially he was going with PVC pipe but saw rolls of cardboard and picked those up instead (for free!).
The cardboard tubes were easy to cut down to size and worked well with the desk since it's a liquid-free zone. We would have left the desk at this point, but Dave wanted to frame his iMac. He used the black dividers from the bookshelf and framed the iMac and used an additional shelf on top for more support. We think the desk would look much cleaner without the addition of those items — but to each his own!
