Turn Old Switch Plate Covers Into Desktop Planters

Taking objects that was bound of the landfill and making something useful out of it is something we can get behind. We have talked at length about the benefits of having plants in the home office, so why not create a great planter for them out of old switch plates?

ReadyMade reader Kelly D. sent in this project made from old switch plates. She got the idea after helping a friend paint and noticed that old switch plates were being discarded. She took these old switch plates and turned them into a planter which she then gave as a gift to her friend. This project is rated by ReadyMade as an Easy project and takes half a day to complete.

To make this project you will need: 6 switch plate and outlet covers (use single and solid for sides and bottoms to reduce soil spillage), a handful of small stones or bark, a mesh vegetable bag (like the kind that you buy oranges or onions in), a spoon, dense soil, and herb or lettuce seeds.

The resulting planters are rather good looking with a bit of an mod feel which we think is just the right look for our home office. Also as the creator of this project mentioned, they make great house warming gifts.
