Name: Turner, 16 months
Location: Sunset District, San Francisco, CA
When Turner was about 8 months old, he would fall asleep nursing or cuddling on our bed, and then we would try to transfer him to his crib, but he would wake up every time. In trying to find a solution to the common problem of a baby needing cuddles as he falls asleep (but mama and papa needing their own bed), we started researching Montessori rooms.
They have the baby stay on a regular bed (no crib) and babyproof the whole room! Turner has been sleeping in a queen sized bed since he was 9 months old, and even as a courageous explorer (and sometimes trouble maker), this room has been a great set up for us! When we are sleeping, we put a baby gate in the doorway just in case he decides to explore, but amazingly, he rarely gets off the bed in the night. He usually just calls to us to come get him!
Using some Montessori principles we designed a calm, mellow room that is all accessible for our 16-month old toddler.
The large silk screened "seasons" canvas is the primary inspiration for the room. My husband and I found it on a trip in Mendocino County at a thrift store when we were planning our wedding and I wanted it for a "someday" nursery. We considered getting rid of it a few times since we didn't have room for it, but we found the perfect place.
Some Montessori inspired ideas we used:
Child-safe frames with our pictures in them at his height
Child-safe mirror at his height
Books accessible at his height
Low easy to climb on and off of bed
Clean room without a lot of "stuff"

White Enamel Flatwa...
Love it- we are contemplating getting a toddler bed but I think this is a smarter idea...
Also one more question- what kind of bedframe is that? A pallet? I don't want to use pallets because the wood is so treated and full of chemicals...
How does Turner stay on the bed? I wish I could do a bed but, my daughter rolls constantly!
Anyways, this room is marvelous! I love how you kept the space open that's not cluttered with a bunch of stuff. Simple is always better in my opinion : ]
Where are the book shelves from? They're perfect!
Ha ha, cannot believe that someone still doesn't know where the bookshelves are from!!
It is quite empty but nice bedroom. I like tree poster and that is about it.
Also, can I just say that I love your son's name! One of my friends named her son Turner (after family) and I think it's such a great name.
Hi all! We love having T on a big bed (I just put him down for a nap)! Another bonus is that when we have a house full of guests, T can sleep with us and they can have a big bed to sleep in.
The bedframe is actually four 2x4's with bed slats (you can get them at ikea) over it. His mattress is organic rubber with a wool cover so chemical pallets would be a huge no-no :)
The bookcases are Expedit from ikea - we have them all over the house in various configurations.
So, T has fallen off the bed probably 2-3 times. He rolls off and cries, we run in, put him back on and he falls asleep again. We have a REALLY cushy rug right up next to it so he's not hurt, just annoyed that he woke up. You could get one of those temporary rails - that might help!
@blowingraspberries, we did the same! Turner is my husband's mom's maiden name - and we think it fits our little guy nicely.
Cheers!
Very sweet approach and well-designed. I love kids' rooms like this one that are so simple and leave so much room for imagination. Lovely neutral colors, as well.
This is exactly what I've been looking for bed-wise for our ( hopefully soon ex) co-sleeping 16 month old!
Can you tell me more about the frame you built? Is it sturdy enough for an adult to get into bed with the kiddo as well?
Great room, I am going to incorporate some of your ideas for sure:)
Thanks!
So simple and sweet, I love it. I also love the idea of everything being accessible to the child.
Silly question perhaps, but I'm curious... do you change him on the bed or the floor, since I don't see a changing table?
Can you tell me where you got the book shelves (not the expedit)? I've been looking for front facing shelves for my daughter's books. Thanks!
The front facing shelves are from Ikea- they are spice racks (Bekvam) and they work quite nicely. They've also been featured on here which Michelle020508 was apparently referencing instead of being helpful.

Lucky kid. But I'm laughing because, at the age of 26, after a lifetime of twin beds, I got myself a queen and my mother said she couldn't understand what on earth a single girl would need a queen sized bed for.
This room looks so quiet and peaceful. My fondest memories of childhood are from spaces in our house that were very neutral (granted, it was the 70's), rather than the vivid, blaring colors of some of my friends' rooms. I need to remember that as I constantly feel compelled to stimulate! stimulate! my young daughter.
Thanks for all the love!
I'll take pics of the frame today and post on my blog if anyone wants to see it up close. It is strong enough for adults, for sure. Last night all three of us slept there (leaving our King sized bed empty). Karoon is right about the spice rack book shelves (idea from apartmenttherapy of course :)
I'm not sure if I mentioned this before, but whenever Turner gets insecure, he wants to go "nigh nigh" and we never have fights about getting in bed, which I tend to think is because his bed is a place for family cuddles and love. We put him down all together then sneak away for adult time and get to sleep in our own bed (for most of the night at least). He hates sleeping in our bed - which I hope means that we'll never have the problem of getting him out of our bed when we need alone time.
We gave up the changing table a LONG time ago :) He's an active boy (to say the least) so he won't stay put on a changing table. When we did have one, it was just a changing pad on top of a dresser. We change him wherever we can pin him down (usually on the living room floor or on the bed).
Wow this is awesome!!!!, i did the same thing with all three of my kids all under 5 today that were nursed in bed, i got a Japanese futon on tatami, flor carpet tiles one black chalkboard paint wall another with boxes of toys from ikea and the exedit book shelf from ikea, fun posters to pull down. im glad to see you did this as well, around here we play musical beds still.
I love it, your son is a lucky little guy. I'm also going to check out those floor bed instructions if you post them. My daughter went through a stage where the crib was more trouble than it was worth, but the twin bed was still a bit high. She slept on a twin mattress on the floor and I still feel a bit guilty for that set up! Your frame would be perfect if I have the same problem with my next little one.
Cute! I second the comment on your son's name...we also have a son named Turner (for the meaning, my dad is a carpenter) who we call "T" :)
