A few months back I moved to Chicago, the land of dueling IKEAs. My world is suddenly filled with birch furniture. In stores, on Craigslist, or garage sales, it's everywhere. It's not all bad, especially if you make it stand out with this simple trick. Although the pale colorings of IKEA birch can say you picked up the least expensive colorway at the big blue and yellow retailer, that doesn't mean it has to be the saddest choice there is.
Instead, steal this idea from 101 Woonideeen (a fabulous Dutch magazine) and try adding a pop of color in small spaces. Try the sides of legs, the edges of tables, or places where shadows might naturally fall. It's a great time to test out neons that might otherwise seem overwhelming, or whatever color happens to be in these days. Salmon? Gold? Go for it!
