We just read that designated U-Haul facilities have implemented a Reuse Program. An area like the one above is set aside where customers can donate items they don't need when it comes time to move or clean out their self storage compartment.
Fellow customers and U-Haul employees can take from the donations area, thus putting unwanted items back into a cycle of use. This is a great idea, as it pairs the collection of unwanted items with activities that often generate them: moving and storage. Do you know of a Re-Use Center in your locale? Please share with everyone below if you know of a Uhaul location that has one of these.

Why are they leaving mattresses? I don't know anyone who would take someone's well-used mattress. Makes me nauseous just thinking about it.

Gives access to a large list of reuse centers
dallas10086 - that's what I thought too, until someone came to pick up an old mattress we had posted on craigslist and even paid us a couple bucks for it.

I think this is a great idea. Kudos to U-Haul.
@dallas Well, not all mattresses are well-used. Some are new. Some are slightly used. Not all areas have issues with bedbugs. And some people are well-desperate.
@mlhdrain well said.
Thank you, mlhdrain.
If UHaul can invest in bedbug checks with a dog expert, then it's great -- but be warned, bedbugs are a very serious issue in colleges as well as urban areas. My friend got completely infested when her neighbor downstairs was completely infested (came up through walls). And she had to throw away all her furniture including antiques because the bugs got into the crevices. Unfortunately her neighbor had purchased a hamper and baskets through Craigslist and that was the source of the problem. So just be careful.
