Name: Uli (5 months)
Location: Lake Tomahawk, WI
Favorite Family-Friendly Place To See or Thing To Do Here: Northern Wisconsin is the absolute best in the summer. The region is blessed with gorgeous, clear, sandy-bottomed lakes and beautiful beaches. Spending the day at one of the thousands of lakes in the region is my favorite way to spend time here. The local libraries, in small towns like Sayner, Minocqua, and Eagle River, also have excellent children's summer programs.
Best Tip for Traveling with Kids: This was my first big trip with our son, and we traveled for a month all over the northern part of the state. When traveling with a baby, I found that we could get through most any situation with an Ergo and an extra couple diaper changes. Oh, and we managed to use cloth for at least 3/4 of the trip, even though we stayed at 7 different places. It wasn't as daunting as I thought it would be! Our main issue was driving from place to place without another person in the backseat with Uli. If it was just the two of us, he had very little patience for long road trips. I ended up timing the driving to coincide with naps, and taking frequent nursing/strolling breaks at rest stops.
Favorite Way to Make it Feel Like Home: We established a routine every morning where we'd cuddle in bed and sing silly songs before we got up. This helped Uli to adjust better to the constant changes in sleeping arrangements. We also would send a video or photo to his dad every morning so he could stay in touch with all of the changes that were happening in our month away.
An Item you MUST Take With You While Traveling: The iPhone was seriously helpful. When we stayed in a camper one night and it was literally pitch black out (we were in the middle of the woods), I downloaded a free nightlight app that let me keep an eye on Uli during the night. I also downloaded a white noise app that helped him to fall asleep more easily. It also enabled us to forgo packing a camera, iPod, etc.
