Planes, trains and traveling pains. It's that time of year when many of us go that extra mile (literally) to be with family, during a season when traveling is often less than pleasant thanks to the crowds. We here at Unplggd feel your pain and have some travelling companion apps to lend a hand...
Creating a trip itinerary takes effort and there is always the chance of a change of plans. Kayak is a trip manager that lets you track flight status', compare prices of flights, hotels, car rental deals and even look up baggage fees. There are apps that mindlessly alert by sound or notification like an alarm when told to do so. Then there are apps that warn you ahead of time before a problem occurs. FlightTrack may be a pricier option but will make things easier offering real time departure information, delays, gate numbers (at a glance) and zoomable maps to view flights in progress. The best part about this app is if there are any cancellations it'll let you know the instant it happens and even help find alternate flights in their place. Integration with iPhones calendar and sharing flight status' by Facebook, e-mail or Twitter help to keep loved ones informed. $5
If you read through FlightTrack and want to order what they're having, FlightView is the Android equivilant. Detailed information on gates, delays, cancellations and weather across the nation are available to keep you up to date whenever. Flights can be saved to your phone so wherever data (and data costs) aren't available, your itinerary is always available. Sharing via e-mail, Facebook, Twitter as well as MMS or LinkedIn keep FlightView on par with FlightTrack with the added benefit of being much cheaper. Lite: Free - Flight Tracker: $1 - Elite: $4

Simply genius are the words to describe Travelnapp. We love long trips (especially train rides) since it gives us intimate time with our e-readers and other such handhelds. Travelnapp takes care of that 'where am I now?' conundrum once and for all by using GPS to track the current location. Feel free to sit back, take a nap, read a book or get caught up with work while your phone alerts you to checkpoints in your journey or upcoming transfers. Working in the background to optimize battery life, the best thing about Travelnapp is that it works under a locked screen so it'll be with you however far you go. Free
