You know that Steampunk has hit the mainstream when a celebrated Swiss watchmaker is planning on creating a hybrid smart phone. From the press release and the information that is currently available on the web, it looks like the phone will be a clockwork type, meaning that there will be a lot of gears involved. Kinetic movement clocks and watches have been around for some time. How about a smart phone that is powered by kinetic movement? This means that a phone like that would never need to be charged. I doubt that enough electricity could be generated this way to run a phone completely, but it's a novel idea and I think that Ulysse Nardin is working on this right now.
Ulysse Nardin has partnered with SCI Innovations in order to create this phone. It will be unveiled at Baselworld in a few weeks. The phone's name is the Chairman. Before you get really excited, let us tell you that Ulysse Nardin made a watch named Freak and sold it for $44,000, so this is most definitely going to be a luxury item.
This is going to be an über-green watch since, as the press-release says, pair cutting-edge kinetic technology with the pedigree of the 163-year old timepiece innovator. It will incorporate a Ulysse Nardin-designed kinetic rotor system. The gadget will be hand assembled under the strict guidelines of Ulysse Nardin. Sounds pretty amazing, but I wonder about the power output of their kinetic rotors. I doubt that enough power will be generated to power the phone. It is, however, a novel concept. Hopefully, it won't just be a fancy watch stuck to a fancy phone with diamonds all over it. It's just too bad that all of us peasants will have to stick with power-hungry iPhones and the like.
