Many of us will be traveling to our childhood homes over the holiday vacation. Aside from enjoying being with your family and familiarity of your home, take an opportunity to go through old mementos and uncover some childhood gems for your current home.
When I visited my own family over Thanksgiving, I uncovered these old silhouettes of my parents and older brother (i wasn't even born yet!). I made some copies and can now frame and add these family gems to my art gallery. A friend of ours was home in Chicago and went through some old boxes that had been in the garage. Aside from finding a Gerado tape cassette, magazine photos of Corey Haim and Kirk Cameron and other 80s items, she found a turquoise lock box. Since she is in the process of making over her office space, she now has a place to keep little office supplies and a bit of her 80s love in her current design.
How about you, Apartment Therapy? What childhood gems have you uncovered that now sits in your current home?

We're currently pulling up old carpet and cleaning up the wood floors upstairs- we're going to need some rugs.

Amazingly- my family is coming to see us in a week & my mom is actually bringing up a whole set of woven rugs that my grandmother had made. They were in my house growing up, but my mom doesn't use them anymore! I can't WAIT for her to bring them up- they're perfect for what I'll need! :)
(1) A silhouette from Disneyland, just like those pictured above, but without the oval frame. (2) My bronzed baby shoes.
i love those disneyland silhouettes. My parents never got it for us (there were 5 of us, so i don't blame them), but I am still jealous of my cousin's silhouettes with their little toddler apple heads
hey kids!
go home and steal things from your parents!
(just kidding)
okay, I consider this a treasure....but when I went home for thanksgiving, I came back with a load of my japanese sailor moon toys. I adore sailor moon, I have almost all my life. The past few years, I've realized how much it influenced my artistic style and I've come to really appreciate it.
Also - all the toys go for outrageous amounts on ebay!! (I've seen stuff go for over $1,000!)
lame, but it's a treasure to me :)
Miss Upsetter--
OK, are you my daughter???
She has a huge collection of Sailor Moon stuff in the attic, and she's in the middle of writing a college application essay about how much Sailor Moon influenced her artistic style.
I personally have always had a thing for Tuxedo Mask...
Photo collages from my junior and senior year in highschool now hang in my garage next to my washer and dryer. From dances to the senior graduation trip to Mex, I'm always reminded of great people and times we had not to mention some questionable moments in fashion.
My parents decorated mostly in the 80's country style. BUT, some of the antiques are better than anything C&B or PB could make now. If I had time I'd like to scan all the family photographs for wall art. Now that would be a treasure!
