The word grow lights might have you conjuring up something from the TV show Weeds, but in all reality, if you don't have the most well lit indoor space and outdoor space is only a dream — they can be the perfect thing! Plant what you want, eat what you want and best of all, save electricity while doing so!
We've mentioned one or two different ways to grow veggies and herbs inside in the past and of course there's always the Aero Garden and while all these methods are all fantastic hydroponic systems, they limit you to what can be grown.
Being able to grow in dirt means you can grow what you wish with little cost or set up (outside of the lights). We love these under-the-counter LED's that can be turned on during the day or at night to give your plants the boost they need to keep on putting everything from salad to salsa on your table. Each light retails for $159 from Clean Air Gardening and can even be used on regular house plants as well.
In our own loft, we're in a basement unit and our windows are directly at street level. Although it makes taking the dog out at night easy (we totally hop out the window!), it does mean we don't get enough light to grow anything, without added help. Traditional grow lights cost a small fortune to keep operating in a situation like ours, but these little beauties should keep us green and growing for just 2 cents per day!
