We've often wondered if there were bed legs out there that simply attach to the box springs, eliminating the need for that metal frame that commonly comes with mattress sets. Turns out there are. Right here in San Francisco, they're strong, efficient, and they're green:
Universal Bedlegs attach directly to the wood frame of the box spring. They provide support to the middle of the bed, as you can add them at the centerpoint of the bed's span, not just at the corners. And they come in all different sizes depending on the height at which you want your bed: 3, 5, 7, or 10 inches.
Made of all recycled materials, the legs have been used in hotels for years and are available for individual purchase right here.

This is TOTALLY the answer to an issue I am having right now. I have a box spring I want to keep, but the frame is no longer my style and I am going to donate it to the Salvation Army.
A while ago I bought an IKEA "box spring"/bed base and discovered the genius...they are designed to have legs attached directly to them like this, only in the case of the IKEA legs and bases, they're decorative and are required only at the corners.
In either case, I think this is an idea that opens up a world of options for those annoying box springs. Add some upholstery and you've got an instant finished bed vs. an ugly old box spring and metal frame that you then have to figure out how to cover up.
I do think that it would be just as easy to DIY this as to buy the product in the post, but still...
I never even considered attaching legs to a box spring--this is great! We're in a tiny apt, and are holding off on buying any large furniture (trying to make it an easy move out in a few years), but are sick of our metal frame w/ wheels sliding all over the hardwood. Most useful post I've seen :)
Very good idea.
Boxsprings here in NZ pretty much always have legs which screw into the base - there are screw holes drilled already into the frame. Using a bedframe along with a boxspring and mattress is uncommon unless done for style reasons (and even then I'm pretty sure most people go for flexi-slats and a mattress only, rather than the boxspring as well). It makes having a bed fairly easy since it's just the boxspring base with legs and then a mattress on top - no need to worry about a bulky or ugly frame.
why do they come with metal frames anyways? I've always hated them. The wheels don't lock, there is always one sharp, exposed edge... Simple feet would be cheaper for mattress stores as well!
Ordered these today in black - they seem like the perfect solution for my situation.
The website is very helpful - there is even a "How To" video - which I recommend watching before you purchase as the sides of your box spring have to be at least 2 1/4" or you can't install these.
My plan is to 'upholster' the box spring in a black fabric of some sort - to give it the illusion of a platform bed. Hope it works! Great post!
This is what I always do! You can also buy 'surface plates' at home depot which you screw into the wood and wood or metal legs that screw into the surface plates. I haven't had a real bed frame in at least a decade.
