Living in small spaces means getting creative when it comes to gardening. I love cooking with fresh herbs, but I haven't had great luck growing them indoors with limited space. This quick DIY project by Upcycled Stuff is an easy way to grow herbs inside or out without losing square footage.
In true upcycling fashion, she took old soup cans and drilled a few holes in the bottom for drainage. You could also use coffee cans and other funky aluminum cylinders to play with the symmetry of the garden. Then add one more hole near the rim to wrap the twine through, so it can be strung vertically at the end.

Add a few coats of paint, especially chalkboard paint if you like her design, and plant your new herbs!
We love that this is not only a great space-saver, but that it's also portable. Read the full tutorial on Upcycled Stuff's Blog.

Great for outside, but inside you'd need to rig up something to catch drained water.
For inside, I actually thought these would be fun in the kids playroom or home office for crayons, paint brushes, etc. To use them as planters inside, I would suggest no holes in the bottom and adding your plants to a yogurt cup (or some other plastic container headed to the recycle bin) and putting that inside your can. I would try to avoid standing water directly inside the can or it'll rust on ya. I hope you give it a try - happy upcycling!
I'm going to use this inside, but with a decorative can hung from fishing line, so it looks like it's floating! Several different decorative cans hanging from different heights above my kitchen sink will look super cute!
Oh, I like that idea! I would LOVE to see pics posted to the UpcycledStuff Facebook page.
