We've blogged about raising chickens in New York and Los Angeles but it's still sometimes hard to grasp the idea of having urban backyard chickens. One photographer, Todd Parsons, has documented San Francisco's growing movement for backyard chickens with impressive results.
As the movement for local, home-raised food continues to grow, backyard chickens are a natural fit for fertilizer, eggs, pest control, and allowing us to connect with our food.

I love city chickens. Great photos, thanks!
A few years ago, SF filmmaker Christie Herring made a happy little short film about a few San Francisco chicken keeping households. You can see "Chickens in the City" via ITVS's online here: http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/insideindies/shortsfest_2006/player.html?chosen=chickens
We actually keep ducks instead, no worries about crowing if you accidentally get a male. And the ducks are so easy to take care of (just be sure to fence in the garden until the plants are a decent size). Haven't had to worry about pesticides for 3 years, they love slugs and caterpillars.
