When you think about getting away, you usually think about a tent and boots or a suitcase and a hotel room, but there are a few enterprising folks who have really pioneered the art of nomadic living, urban or otherwise, with a high degree of comfort. Here then is my list of the best super cool small portable homes I've seen over the past four years that you can actually get your hands on and escape with....

>> The Micro Compact Home: Featured in the current Prefab show at MoMA, this is your futuristic dream home. Designed by Richard Horden and inspired by the classic scale and order of a Japanese tea-house, it's also a technological marvel.

>> LoftCube: This cool little penthouse was designed by Werner Aisslinger and meant to be dropped by helicopter anywhere you want - including on the rooftop of a tall building.

>> Tumbleweed Tiny House Company: Jay Schafer is a super cool designer and teacher who started designing these small homes as an experiment in "Subtractive design" or "low-impact architecture". Each one is a kit and some are small enough to be mounted on wheels.

>> DWR Airstream Trailer: A classic updated by DWR, which means that the interior is all set and ready to go with all stylish linens and accessories included.

>> Deseo Dutch Camper: A classic interpreted by the Dutch. The Deseo is like an iPhone version of the Airstream. You have to go there to get one, though.
