So many things about this nursery are to die for. Standouts for us are the charcoal grey walls, the rug, and the window treatments. But the most interesting choice in the nursery is the use of a couch in place of a rocker or glider.
I'm personally a fan of the glider for nursing but I can admit it's not a necessity. Depending on the parent, you may prefer a larger piece of furniture like a plump couch that lets you sit or lay down during those late night feedings. And no doubt a couch is a comfortable place for story time as your baby grows. If you're curious about the rest of this lovely nursery, run over to Elements of Style to see more photos.
So tell us - do you prefer a couch in the nursery?

This is our first baby, so the plan could change at any moment. So far, I definitely prefer a couch. In all my years of nannying, gliders just seemed uncomfortable to me. I wanted to get a sleeper sofa, but husband wants to keep our full-sized bed in there for guests. I'll be turning it into a big day-bed though w/ lots of pillows for nursing and eventual story-time. We'll see if this actually pans out.
I have a couch in the nursery and then a glider in my room. The glider lets us rock her to sleep (LO is only 2 months old and still sleeping in our room) when necessary. The couch in the nursery makes it a comfortable space for my husband and I to send time with our little one. Plus, its great for napping when she's napping in her crib!
I loved having a futon in our nursery - it was great for late night feedings, or times when she was sick I would sleep in there. It was also our guest bed, so the futon was a space saver for us. Admittedly, it wound up in "bed mode" most of the time and not really a couch for us. It wasn't something I had planned on, it really just wound up being a thing I appreciated having (looking back). I think I got more sleep in the long run.
We also had a glider, which was sometimes in the nursery, or sometimes in the living room or in our bedroom, which was nice as a nursing place that could change locations more easily than a couch/bed.
lol, new parents...
try it, but it's hard to rock a couch.
Two kids in and I think a rocking chair is totally optional. I'd rather have a bed or couch for conking out or reading stories or comfortable nursing. Rocking chairs are almost always poorly designed for nursing. If you want movement, bouncing on an excercise ball works just as well. It actually works better for a newborn or a baby with colic.
And cheap.
We had a loveseat (that folds out into a twin bed) in the boys' nursery. But then a glider isn't exactly practical with triplets. :)
I love the color combinations- just beautiful and gender nuetral. Solid work!
I like the idea of a couch in there, but with nursing I had to have a glider/swivel chair. Its not the traditional wood glider you think of, it looks like a regular comfy chair with ottoman. It works now for reading books/cuddling. If the room were any bigger, I'd want a couch too! :)
yeah never used a rocker or glider. I also prefer to nurse and cuddle over rocking. prefer a bed if there is room. Couch is nice too. But bed has my vote. whole family can read and snuggle.
With my first baby, I used the heck out of the glider we had (a cheapie from target). But with baby #2, I think I used it....twice? With a crazy 3 year old running around the house, sitting in the baby's room for 30 minutes to an hour just wasnt practical. I do like the idea of a couch in a nursery...but I can see that being a place for collecting junk.
Although I was not successful in finding the right piece for my second child's room, I desperately wanted to put a sofa in her room instead of a chair to make the space more inclusive to more older child. Nursing time could be more easily shared, piling on for story time, etc. would have been eased by a love seat or couch in the nursery. I ended up loving the chair we got (Room & Board's glider) but sometimes still wish I had looked longer and harder for the rights couch!
I spent most of my time on the couch. I would have loved to have this in our nursery. BTW it looks amazing. Much nicer than our living room let alone our nursery. I dont like our rocker and I always put our babies in there swing, bouncer, or other made for putting babie to sleep thingy. Rarely did i actually hold my baby to rock to sleep. I learned quickly they got use to me and as soon as I layed them down I had to start all over again. Who says you couldnt have both a couch and rocking chair??
As foster parents, we unexpectedly were placed with a two week old. No rocking chair. No glider. I fed him on our couch. Plenty of parents do not or cannot have one of these options and their babies end up healthy and happy. We are now planning for a baby this winter and I have no plans to put a glider/rocking chair in her room. We made it through seven months with our little guy without a lot of what people think of a "necessities" before he went home to his mom. I love the idea of a love seat/couch in the nursery.
this is my favorite nursery ever.
RzBd we did the same thing with our double bed - like a lot of people our 2nd room was a guest room which we turned in to a nursery and rather than removing the bed I turned it in to a daybed with lots of pillows...it was actually featured here on ohdeedoh! Well, I had no idea what would work being a first time mom but we loved having the bed there - with newborn twins it meant I could have both on the bed at a time, the night nanny LOVED having it (after sleeping in so many uncomfortable gliders etc) and I often napped on it in between feeds or if I had a fussy baby which I knew I would be back in to check on countless times I would set up camp ;) It really worked out so well and I was sad to see it go when we moved it out to make more space (we also had an eames rocker in there with the bed so the best of both worlds in a way since the rocker has such a small footprint and yes I have used it a LOT as well!)
I could not decided on a rocker before my daughter was born, and just had a daybed in her nursery. It turned out she hated rocking or even swaying, so a glider or rocker was never needed. We hung out a lot on the daybed.
I am so relieved that I am not the only person who is more into sofas and (non-rocker) chairs in nurseries.
The loveseat in my daughter’s room happened because of necessity, but it is fantastic. It was so much more comfortable for nursing than our rocker. It fits all three of us for bedtime story time. And it has served as a parent (or parent and child) sleeping spot on rough nights.
I now consider rockers/gliders optional, but a couch or loveseat an absolute necessity.
We used a recliner that rocked. My second child had ear infections for the first 10 months and had to sleep upright to prevent the pain most nights. The recliner was more comfortable than a rocker or glider and I could recline a little. This wasn't my first choice, initially, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
Jeez, rich people up in here. My baby barely has his own room, let alone one that fits a couch. Not that I could afford another couch that'll just be used while he's small anyway. I rocking him works like magic to get him to sleep, so I'll stick with that the Craigslist wooden rocker with a seat cusion. I DO prefer to lay on my side and nurse but that works in our room or the livingroom couch.
I knew the wooden rockers and gliders weren't comfy so we went the lazy boy rocker/recliner route and picked our own fabric, it's been the most comfy chair in the house and well worth the investment, my hubby and I have spent many hours rocking and falling asleep with our two babies now. Going on 5 years and it still does the trick:)
Great post. We did a rocker and ottoman with our first and a sleeper sofa with our second. The sofa was by far the better choice for us. Rockers/Gliders are not the best transition pieces when moving to a big girl/boy room and with the cost involved, sofas might be a better choice.
I found that I used the sofa in the very early newborn days so I could watch TV, but as my son got older and needed to be rocked, we got a glider for his room and still use it for story time. I wish we'd had the glider from day one because it really was so much comfier to nurse in. I can see having a bed in the nursery, we just never tried that because I'm pretty happy to sleep on our sofa.
oh, I forgot to say that I think this room is awesome. I wish my bedroom looked as nice.
Ditto the Lazyboy.
That white sofa will be seriously stained if it's actually used by an infant.
I changed my study into the nursery and I tried to reuse some of the things that I had already in there, including a loveseat with a white slipcover. it worked perfectly. you can curl up on it--it was comfy for late night feedings and is still the best spot for reading books together.
