We've discussed using mirrors in unconventional ways, but this tops the cool list. There's the philosophical aspect of seeing yourself look back at you while you look at the piece of art, the creative surprise— picture on mirror? genuis!— and the functional double whammy of getting to use art and light-maximizing mirrors in one fell swoop.
This lovely idea hails from Frank Stuve's highly celebrated Berlin-Charlottenburg apartment, featured on Freunde von Freunden. I've seen framed art suspended on top of a framed mirror before, but actually using a mirror as a picture mat?— new to me!
It's possible that the photos are actually printed on the mirrors, but a similar look could be achieved by mounting the photographs on top of the mirror, and then placing the combination behind glass and a picture frame. That way, you get the reflection from the glass on top of the picture as well as the reflection from the mirror surrounding the picture.

wow! that is stunning. I'd love to recreate this with a small project I am working on. taking a picture parasailing with my husband this summer, putting it in black & white and framing in black frame with a white mat. It'd be even more stunning in a glass frame...now to just figure out how to do it!...
Mirrors as mats. Right. Whatever. What I want is the lamp on the right side of the first picture.
or the art of well place collections, the black vases, the pottery on the sideboard, the art glass on the dining room table, AND the mirrored matting. Well and lovingly done.
Brilliant - I like!
I actually did this recently and I love the effect. I saw it in an Elle Decor magazine last summer and it just looked so different and unexpected but not obtrusive. I like that it opens up the wall a bit and reflects light around. And that I have yet another emergency lipstick check at the ready.
Beautiful idea. I just came across the perfect mirrors for a project like this! On sale even :O)
love it!
I think I'd like this with just a mat and a picture. The double reflection would make me nuts.
But in the meantime...please send me the colored glass items on the table and all of the pottery .
Thank you
OMG I LOVE IT, have to do it NOW. I am fast running out of wall space.
I feel it would distract from the art. Would you frame a picture with pictures of your forehead, chin, and ears?
Why on earth didn't AT just post the link to Freunde von Freunden? Instead, when they mentioned Freunde von Freunden, they linked to another page on AT with themselves talking about Freunde von Freunden where, at the bottom of THAT post, there's a link to Freunde von Freunden.
Sheesh.
Rob in PDX - simmer, there's a link to freunde von freunden at the bottom of this post too. i linked to the first one to show that we had already featured this apartment.
LeahDC- Whoa, that comment was kind of curt for someone who works for AT.
I'm with @lindalooby, I'm running out of wallspace with all the awesome things I see on this site! This idea is something I would have never considered but now feel like I need to atleast try. Yay for new ideas!
