Growing up in a one story house in the South didn't offer the luxury of having an attic. I know that most people could honestly live without their attic (except for it's usually plentiful storage area) but maybe that's because it's not being used to its beautiful potential…
There are definite aspects of attic bedrooms that make them so beautiful and successful — the rustic wood, the vaulted ceilings and the unique shape to name a few. Even though the vertical space may be less than that of a traditional bedroom, attic bedrooms typically offer more floor space since they're above the other rooms in the house.
Place the bed below a window for symmetry and built in headboard. Take the traditional route by keeping wall colors and bedding neutral; let the architecture speak for itself.
What do you think of attic bedrooms?

I'm in love with the black circle blanket in the first photo.
I have a charming attic bedroom and it is H-O-T right now. A charming basement bedroom sounds fantastic.
I would love to have an attic bedroom either for myself or my kids love that one photo.
Does anybody know where the black circle blanket is from or where to get something similar? It's fantastic!
Yes, we have a charming attic bedroom as well and it is hot, hot. hot. Luckily, we also have a first floor guest room that we keep at the ready during summer.
The first photo looks great; the second one, not so much. The feng shui is awful; the ceiling is too low and way too claustrophic for 2 beds.
circle blanket!
I loved my attic bedroom, but yea, it used to be insanely hot. Until I bought a wall A/C unit. Then it became pretty nice. The stairs are so narrow that the only furniture I could fit up there is stuff you have to assemble that comes in flat packs (IKEA!). I used two extra long twin sized beds pushed together in a platform frame to make a kind sized bed, which was awesome.
Does anyone know where to find the black circles blanket in the first image? I love it (and the attic too).
Yay! I love this post. I am remodeling my attic into a master suite right now. Won't be quite as rustic as these, though. Plenty of insulation, drywall and air conditioning. Cuz it does get hot in an attic.
I LOVE the second photo-- so casual and easy. Also adore the black circle blanket-- would love to know the source!
Dear God, someone must know where that black circle blanket came from ?!??
I love the second photo too, and it's making me think, is it worth it to finish an attic that would be that low? I'm almost 6' and can only walk straight in the very middle of my attic, but I don't have the budget to install dormers.... I'd love an upstairs bedroom!
2nd picture...way to claustrophobic. First picture...awesome! The other three..eh. But I do love the idea of an attic bedroom, when done right. However, I've seen too many scary movies, if I had one my imagination would run way to wild.;)
I've been thinking about doing something along these lines... (quickly outgrew our 3 bedroom rancher -- 3 yr old + 1 yr old TWINS!) Any recommendations on moving forward? I'm capable from the construction side, -- but just don't want to damage the integrity of my home...
This reminds me of the great attic children's playroom that my next-door neighbors made for their kids when I was a little kid living next door in Nebraska. It was so much fun!
Still no source on the black circle blanket, huh? Pretty please, someone???
Circle circle circle
i'm joining ladyearl, jenjenjenjen and my boys in desiring the source on that beautiful graphic circles blanket in the first room. (and well, desiring the blanket itself...) love !
