Velvet hangers have a lot going for them. They're thin, so they don't take up too much space. Their semi-fuzzy shell also makes it harder for clothes to slip off the hanger. (One word of warning: some people don't like the way they hug your clothes, since it's harder to quickly grab a shirt off the hanger.) In case you're thinking about a closet upgrade, we've rounded up a few sources below...
• Martha Stewart Velvet Hangers at Macy's, $9.99 for 6

costco has like a 60 piece set for less than 40, i believe.
Want the best price ever? Costco. Box of 50 black velvet hangers for $18.99.
My mom bought me velvet hangers a few years ago, thinking that they fit perfectly into my Type-A organization habits. I didn't really like them. I think they make it harder to put clothes on the hanger, and I hate the feeling of the velvet. Plus, I'm paranoid that they're going to shed on my clothes.
I saw a suggestion on Real Simple yesterday that I liked much better. Wrap rubber bands around the ends of your hangers to keep clothes from slipping off.
Or you could use that rubbery plastic dippy stuff on your normal hangers - you know the rubbery plastic dippy stuff that was on this website other day.
I'm just in the process of converting my whole closet to them.... the ones from bed bath and beyond, 10 for $10. love love love them! yes, you can't just whip clothes off them, but maybe that's a good thing to treat my clothes more gently. And even my most diaphanous and complicated garments stay on the hanger, for once!
Yea, my grandmother got a ton of these and gave me 5 of them, they are great for dresses, not so much for pants
If you don't care if they all match, I've seen different brands of these at a discount at TJ Maxx over the last six months or so.
The huggable hangers are also available at hsn.com and Target. I love them!
I got a few of these to test them out. they're wonderful for my thin rayon jersey shirts that I've been afraid to hang up but they make it such a pain to get shirts on/off that I'll only be using them for stuff that won't work on normal plastic tube hangers.
and fyi: they don't take up any less room than my cheap-o plastic hangers, but they do seem to hang more neatly (which may be because my plastic hangers were bought at different times so they are ever so slightly different from each other).
Two years ago I bought all wood hangers so the closet would look nice and organized. But shortly I realized that not as many things fit in my closet. Bummer.
I just switched to the velvets and I love them. I literally have twice the amount of space now and my dresses dont pool on top of my shoes at the bottom of the closet. They are not as great looking as the wooden but functionally they are far superior.
I wonder, how the hangers affect the shoulders of clothing. I have a mix of plastic (the crystal cut type http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=15075040) and wooden hangers from Ikea. I like that they're sturdy, but I don't like how the ends can poke holes into my clothing. I'm guessing that maybe they're a bit too large for my women's clothing. Maybe they're more ideal for coats, jackets, and men's clothing.
Supposedly, these flocked hangers don't do the same with their more rounded corners. Have you found this is the case?
Appreciate hearing your feedback!
I have a couple of common, metal hangers that have been crocheted around with fabric strips. I've had them forever & have no idea how I ended up with them but clothes do stay put on them. I've thought of doing the same with scrap fabric to a few hangers but I thought I have more important projects to spend the time on.
I love the ultra-slim velvet hangers I bought from Bed, Bath, & Beyond. My closet is only 20 inches wide, so they enable me to fit more clothes in it.
I just discovered these clips, which attach to my ultra-slim velvet hangers to turn them into skirt hangers. More room for skirts - hooray! Link: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=16142387
lolax - As long as you're not putting particularly heavy items on them, they work great for not adding bumps to your shoulders. I've put really light jersey fabric on them and absolutely no bumps.
No bumps, more room, clothes hang nicer, flatter, it's all true for my closet. I've bought them at WalMart in sets of 4 for $4, and they carry a nice matching pants hanger that's a small velvet tube on a chrome hanger. I share a closet with my husband who has stuck with wire & plastic hangers-it's like a before & after example of why the velvet ones are better. When we move, he's said he will switch.
ross dress for less also has them :)
I bought mine new and unused on Ebay for about a third of the price in the stores. Same product, much better price. I love mine!
Costco is selling 50 for $14.99 right now--I bought mine there yesterday.
I've bought tons of these from places like Ross and TJMAXX. I can usually get 10-15 for about $3-$5.
oh my gosh my mom gave me a bunch for christmas and i can't stand them! they are so annoying to get clothes on and off. i don't use them at all now. i prefer my nice plastic hangers
I love ours. We got them years ago when Joy Magano had the monopoly on HSN. Bought some from TJ MAxx and they were not as sturdy. The metal hanging part came out of one within a week. I strongly suggest you get the originals Joy Magano brand. All versions or not created equally. Ours have held up for years.
I love these, especially for hanging pants and skirts. I find that they don't put bumps in sweaters or tops either.
I get them at T.Js or Marshalls and haven't had any problems.
