2007 marks the 40th anniversary
of the Summer of Love, and while there's been a lot of hype around the musical acts that flowered in 1967, we're thinking about Vernor Panton
and the psychedelic designs he made for Vitra
in the 60s. With names like the Amoebe
and the Moon Lamp
, Panton's line is way groovy, but it's lasted well beyond the Summer of Love, remaining in production today.
Panton's designs are sort of like Paul McCartney. Sure, the Amoebe chair may have taken some mind-altering substances back in the day, but it's hard working and functional and has endured as a cultural icon.
For more trippy flashbacks, take a look at the Panton installation at the Whitney's Summer of Love exhibit.
