Two weeks ago, we had a remarkable meetup in which we got to hear six people share the problems they're having with one room in their home. Then the crowd jumped in to help. The pics above are all from Vicki's bathroom after she repaired the walls herself...
Now she needs help figuring out how to store her laundry and what to hang above the toilet. Head below the jump to find out more about the problem and help with your comments...
Name: Vicki
Location: Rego Park, NY (Queens)
Room: Bathroom
Size: Bathroom (L)9'5" x (W)4'5"=>about 42 sq. ft. Size of home- around 900 sq.ft
Years lived in: 10 years
Problem: This is my bathroom in pre-war co-op building; I repaired all of the plaster, cracks, peeled paint and mildew spots. Now my goal is smart arrangement for things so it doesn’t look too tight. How can I reorganize with what I already have (shelf, laundry, mob, container and guinea pig rest spot….. etc)?
Specifically: how can she redo the hamper situation on the left and what could she do to smartly arrange and store her belongings to the right of her bathroom cabinet.
Budget: Not too much

Amazing job, Vicki on the results of your work thus far! I'd say you've already solved the lion's share of your problems.
As for the hamper, perhaps something with a smaller 'footprint' and a lid? There are still some nice-looking vintage ones out there, in both wicker and metal, that would complement the retro feel of your room.
For storage... I know many people object to those shelved units that stand on the floor and come up behind the toilet, but I think they can be a viable solution and that there are some decent ones available. As an alternative, perhaps some wall-mounted shelves above the toilet, or a corner cupboard?
(guinea pig resting spot??)
I agree with putting a wall mounted cabinet with doors over the toilet. Open shelving over the toilet is just gross to me.
Additional storage could be LACK shelves from IKEA mounted rather high on the wall above the towel rack. I can see fresh towels and pretty storage boxes with scrubs and bath salts inside. Also, atop the shelves I can see a couple of clear canisters with soaps, cotton balls or loofahs...you get my drift. Use the amazing height of those ceiling. NOTHING ON THE FLOOR if you can help it.
As far as the dirty clothes, nix the basket all together and get a laundry bag and throw the bag in the back of your closet (wash often :)). Hampers are such a waste in small spaces.
Good Luck!
My bathroom is about the same size, except it is narrower if you can believe it. Agree about taking the hamper off the floor. Maybe a decorative hook and a nice looking cloth laundry bag hanging from the wall over the tile? Also, get rid of the clear shower curtain. Get a nice one that adds color. FORGET about the over the toilet 'etager', they are so tacky, and tend to be wobbly. Completely edit what is in the bathroom, some of the supplies not used that often can go in a closet. Also, how many people in your family? You seem to have a lot of towels in there.
scattered thoughts in no particular order.
if you like where your laundry basket is, then get two narrow ones, one for either side of the pipe. Yes, they do exist & of course, I can't find a picture right now. You can also put a hamper in the hallway right outside the bathroom door, using one that doesn't 'scream' hamper. The size of the hamper or laundry bags all depend upon how often you can do your laundry.
Shelves or cabinets above the "throne" are a good idea & don't have to be wobbly or unstable. Try mounting a cabinet to the ceiling AND wall. But don't make it a full depth cabinet if it will seem too confining or claustrophobic.
Bring "the eye" up to decor or color higher. Paint the upper walls a medium pale but cheerful color that you like. Think about alternating vertical stripes of matte & gloss paints in the same color or a minute shade different. You may not want a strong contrast in such a small space, but having alternating gloss & matte will give good texture. (you could also pin-stripe or vary the width of the stripes)
Keep the towel racks, but draw the eye up the wall away from them. You might also think using about narrow glass shelves where you could set "pretty" items that you need in the bathroom.
Storage idea: Put a shelf (or small cabinet such as one you might find above a fridge) up above the window to store infrequently needed items. Use the high ceiling space where it won't bother you to see storage... think above the door, too.
Consider a new shower curtain rod, since that one is.... crooked & uneven. Again, you might find one that you can suspend from the ceiling instead of hanging from the wall. The clear shower curtain is great for letting more light in, but what about using an ultra sheer colored one? Yes, it might be hard to find one long enough to surround the tub but you could combine two just using snaps.
i know vicki is looking to re-arrange, as opposed to buy new storage units, but the top-of-the-toilet storage could only really be remedied with one of the following:
- shelving (pretty cheap at IKEA) above the tiling, next to the mirror. even 2 or 3 shelves would really help with the clutter.
- a rectangular basket with dividers that fits on top of the toilet. i have one and it works well w/storage and organization:

the laundry basket is low and bulky, for a long and narrow space like this. she should really invest in a slimmer, taller hamper that has a front opening to stuff laundry into and a hard top to keep her guinea pig. my thoughts go to either of the following:

or buying this frame
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10103804
and placing her guinea pig's cage on top, then sliding a taller, slimmer laundry basket underneath.
good luck!
I think a tall, fairly deep shelving unit in that corner near the window would provide space for the laundry basket and containers, and perhaps also the guinea pig (?????).
Hampers make clothes stink...........just toss your dirty clothes in a laundry basket in the bedroom.
Don't keep your dirty clothes in the damp bathroom, anyway.
In total agreement on the previous suggestions, nothing worse than stuff stacked precariously on top of the toilet, get thyself to IKEA, TJ Maxx and its ilk and get the following.
A cabinet, wall mounted preferably or open shelving for over the toilet to stash the stuff on top of the tank as it is, get a cylindrical storage thingy that is designed to hold toilet paper and place down near the toilet for easy access and get a taller, narrower hamper w/ a lid to hid the dirty clothing - as had already been mentioned, perhaps a vintage one in a nice color like a soft yellow perhaps or find one and paint it a color you like and I also agree, you need more color in the room and yes, do go high for storage and add some moisture proof artwork as well to draw the eye up and you CAN buy a new shower curtain rod much like the one you have, but will have a piece of piping with it that you can then screw to the ceiling and will hold the rod level and Restoratin Hardware may have just what you need or perhaps any good home improvement center may have them, or they can be ordered and get one of those shelving units that hang over the shower to hold your shampoos etc and those can be found without too much for good quality ones at TJ Maxx or similar places. My mom recently found a dark finished metal one that was sturdier than her old chrome one and it was $12 or so at TJ Maxx and contains a rod for the wash cloth, a space for the soap etc. Looks and works great and came with 2 suction cups to hold it against the tile.
Good luck.
Maybe you are asking too much of a tiny space???
I think I'd try to find a soft-sided laundry hamper/bag on a rack that can go under your sink, somehow. (Maybe hide it with a skirt.)
I'd get an over-the-toilet shelving unit from a home improvement store that has a closed cabinet and maybe towel bars. Stash all that clutter currently on the toilet in there.
Maybe you can hang a curtain panel (in a striking black and white design) or narrow bamboo blind from the ceiling in front of that vertical pipe and keep your mop behind it. (Make the panel look decorative, but keep it really simple and plain -- a flat panel, not anything gathered, which would look messy.)
Whatever you do, good luck!
Good luck
