Having spent the last several months pricing kitchen cabinets, cruising Craigslist and keeping an ear to the ground for a bargain, there's very few to be had. One thing I hadn't considered however was purchasing my cabinets without doors. Check out this video that explains why mixing and matching will save you big bucks!
Although the mix and match look isn't for everyone, the video from Pascal Anson featured over at IKEA Hackers, does make several valid points. A look like this only works when it's really mixed and matched. Doing it half way would make things look a little off, though you could easily mix and match different styles and paint them all the same color or distress their look a little further to make them appear worn and not just disjointed with one another.
If you have a few minutes to kill, make sure to check out Pascal's other YouTube videos that feature home decor projects or the innovation of particular items. Do you like the look he created? Sound off in the comments!

White Enamel Four-P...
It's not a look that would work for me, but I like it. And I really admire people who think creatively like this and make something cool out of next to nothing. Enjoyed seeing it.
Looks hella crazy. Maybe it wouldnt look so wack (yes I said it cause going old skool here was necessary ) if it was painted all one color...but it doesnt work for me.
Different styles in all the same color would be just up my alley. hmmm This is quite clever.
agreed. This look is wack fo sho. Not clever. There are better ways to go cheap.
Smart, fun and different! Would work even better without the left hand side lower one, in wood, but I like the idea. I wouldn't have them in my house, though, since I'm sure they would drive me crazy in the shortest of time.
Yuck!
Cabinets are something that come up at auctions in my area. Look for those if you have a big enough vehicle (or could rent/borrow one) to carry them.
That look is a bit eccentric for me. I could see doing all one color but different textures.
Urk. Maybe, just maybe, it would work if all painted one color. As it is, not so much liking it. I'm all for frugality, but this steps over the line to cheap b**d. [Not a prude, just not sure if AT removes posts for profanity]
Not loving the final look, but it's one way to start a renovation cheaply. You can get random doors at the as-is section for a couple of bucks to tide you through until you can afford the door style of your choice.
All he needs to do is the paint the whole thing one color, get one set of pulls that match, and he's good to go. Cabinets are insanely expensive.
Personally, I hate renovations that redo the kitchen which then looks like it was dropped in from Mars. When I did my kitchen, I kept all the original cabinets by stripping enough paint the doors would close, and then added inexpensive cabinets that were meant to be painted. It suited the house perfectly, and managed to look like the entire kitchen was original, just updated with new appliances and light fixtures.
It looks like he's at Ikea trying to pick a cabinet style.
It's like he stole the display wall of cabinet doors from ikea... even if it was painted all one colour I still don't all the door designs would go together.
It may save him money in the short term - but if he ever decides to sell, he's going to need to spend a whole lotta money to replace all those doors and drawer fronts.
Spend once, Spend wisely.
i love it.
living in some cookie cutter stainless steel granite thing...now that's wack!
haha, i love it! i can't recall if i saw it on at or another crafty/design blog, but someone featured a piece of furniture that was made up of many different drawers. i was so envious (and inspired!) i dig it when people mix and (mis)match!
though i can understand the apprehension to doing it to something permanent like the kitchen cabinets.
Hella YES, cabinets are expensive! I got what I consider to be a very reasonable price for my 10 x 16 kitchen from Lowe's -- and it was $8000! Not including backsplash or new floor (the posse and I are walking around on 36-year-old vinyl). I've been giving serious thought to doing cabinets on the outside wall (where the sink and appliances are) and having a carpenter build open shelving for me on the opposite wall (where the fridge lives).
My cabinets are beyond repair -- four carpenters and my appliance gurus all told me they were out of plumb, not level, and made of exceptionally flimsy plywood. They're literally falling apart. So complete replacement is the only option. Guess I'll have to win the lottery for that!
Sorry, but it just looks cheap to me. I love DIY, eclectic, artistic, bargain, and repurposed decor, but I'm not feeling this one. Personally, I'd rather see no doors than that.
I think it could be much cooler if he played up the patchwork quilt effect.
our friends chris and steve did a similar thing with a better effect:

@redneckmodern: digging the tone on tone and colours. but the brown and white in the video, not so much.
This has to be the stupidest thing I have ever seen about a kitchen remodel.
Nothing matching is cheaper is a tip?
I actually think the different colours for the pulls is a great idea. Hm.
This is ridiculous.
i love this !!
