Project by: Jill Danyelle: Art & Design
Location: Upper West Side, NYC
Jill tells us about her work on this home: I really enjoy getting to know my clients and creating a space that speaks not only to their functional needs, but also feels like their home when they walk in the door. This apartment is a one bedroom in a co-op building on West End Ave. The vibe for the space was a mix of classic, more traditional pieces combined with some rustic and Old World Spanish notes.
I tried to find pieces that had already stood the test of time and could last a few more decades, such as the vintage Drexel sideboard and armoire. The latter supposedly came from the old Playboy mansion in Chicago. We saved a vintage bed that was a wreck, by having it stripped and oiled. The Lane dresser was also worse for the wear, but with a new coat of blue paint, its brass fixtures pop and it really makes the bedroom. One of our favorite things were the vintage brass sconces I found. They turn on/off and dim just by touching the brass. The client loved them and it is such a great example of how the functional aspect of design can influence your experience.
We totally changed the mood of the kitchen with some gray paint and a simple reworking of the office area that sits at one end. It diminished some jarring contrasts and maximized space and functionality. The main living space does not have a ton of direct light, so I tried to maximize it with mirrors. I admit that some grasscloth might have been fantastic here and I lobbied a bit for blue paint, but the white paint we went with did freshen up the space.
Most of the items found are vintage, antique, eBay, craigslist, flea market, you name it, so we didn't have to worry about lead times too much - and this really helped stretch the budget. I love these pieces for the character that they can bring to a space, but we decided to go with a new sofa (Room & Board), which I think can be a good decision if you don't want to deal with reupholstery. I bought the blue velvet chair on craigslist because we had already gotten rid of all the previous furniture. It was in good condition and I felt guilty my client would be without a comfortable chair for six weeks. I thought we might resell it and go with something else in the end, but turns out the client loved it.
Thanks, Jill!

Somehow all that art hanging around the TV bothers me. Anyone care to comment?
I agree. Around a TV is not the place for a gallery wall.
I do love those bentwood style chairs. I'm usually not a fan of bentwood but those are so handsome!
I actually like it. There was a post not too long ago about hiding the TV in plain site that included a gallery wall like this. Unlike this one, all the frames were white and so the TV really stood out. I think with darker frames it works though I think it would be even better if the frames were heavier and the wall was painted a color.
Very very tasteful and grown up. I like. Yes, the art around the TV bothers me a little bit, though.
Otherwise - whew! We really are above the age of 21 here!
I think this is very nicely done, and I especially like the bedroom, but I agree with inchbranch about the TV surrounded by art. Personally, I think a bigger TV would look better in that spot, without the art.
The art around the TV bothers me because there's not enough white space between the top of the TV and the bottom of the art. I suspect that has to do with the angle of the photo, and if you stood in front of the TV it wouldn't look that way.
I like the art around the TV -- I think it keeps the TV from sticking out too much like a sore thumb. Maybe the art doesn't get the focus it should, but as long as you're ok with it, I think it's a great way to liven up the space.
Great pieces all around, and beautifully integrated into the home!
I am so in love with this whole place, that I can barely stand it. A particular favorite is that blue dresser and the way the color works in the room. I just love it. Jill has a talent that shines through here, this place makes me swoon. Seriously. I am swooning! :)
Finally! Grown-up spaces that are colorful but sophisicated...nothing cutesy in sight. Very inviting, soothing and stimulating at the same time. I would love to see more from and about this designers work.
Gorgeous, warm space. What an amazing decorator: if I had the money, I would definitely hire her. But the comment on the sconces being appreciated for their functionality was hilarious: aren't homes supposed to be functional first and foremost? Ah, the things normal people take for granted in creating their home :)
Agreed, nice to see a grown up place. Is lovely. I am only bothered by the mirror in the dining space. I wish it were wood framed. The style seems so out of place in an otherwise seamless home. I wish we could have seen a picture of the kitchen. Off to google this designer
Wow, guys. This just went up and there are only a handful of comments, but I am already bowled over. I really worked so hard on every aspect of this space, so I am super pleased AT has allowed me to share it. Thanks for the positive comments. I appreciate the observations about the space being grown up. The client gravitated toward a more classic aesthetic, but I also knew this was an investment of their hard earned money, so I really tried to pick pieces with longevity.
I am also okay with people politely weighing in on what they don't like. A few comments on the TV wall... As I said in the post, we did consider a color for the paint, which I do think would have looked good, and if the budget had allowed I would've thrown grass cloth up on those walls for sure. Still, I am pleased with how it turned out and, more importantly, the client is happy. Interior design is (or should be) a collaboration with the client to create a space for them, so we discussed different options for many aspects of the project. For the TV, we considered a large vintage cabinet as well. I showed the client the gallery wall idea too and that is what we decided to go with. As we used large mirrors on a few of the other walls, we also needed a wall for some art, so it worked out. And, @Pi is right, the minimal white space at the top is due to the low angle this particular photo was taken from, when standing and looking straight on, the white spaces are more balanced.
Thanks again - and I swear I didn't pay @Susan4260 ! What nice things to say, you seriously made my day. @Gloria205 there are over 20 images of this space on my website jilldanyelle.com and I will try to put up a post on the journal today with some behind the scenes, before & afters and resources for anyone who is interested.
Sophisticated and lovely space - the blue dresser is just stunning. I want!
I have no issue with the art around the TV. But then again, I have a similar setup in my place. I have the TV on a an antique stand with art and photos above, behind and around it. I've had at least two friends comment on how much they like it and others who've said nothing. (to each her/his own).
This is one of the few homes done by a designer that looks like it's actually lived in by normal people. I mean that as a compliment. Nicely done and the blue bedroom is especially wonderful. So serene.
Very nice -- looks clean and personalized without looking cluttered! I also have some art hanging above/around my TV. I wasn't sure it worked in my space but I like it now and it helped me get over the big space where the armoire used to be.
Also, love the way the blue dresser and rugs give it a little bit of a Moroccan vibe.
I love that blue dresser with that wall color and the green vase
I LOOOOOVE that bed! It's my dream bed.
I love the TV with the art! It's like making it part of the Art, or making it disappear without spending so much money, like those mirrored TVs.
I love the blue dresser and the trunk coffee table!
I like the art around the tv. I did the same thing except the entire wall is covered with art. The tv blends right in.
Nice rugs.
What paint/color did you use on the blue dresser? It's gorgeous.
Love that space! I want to cover my entire apartment in that blue!
I absolutely love the armoire - and have loved it for over 30+ years. I own it and still get a rush every time I look at it. It's a great piece and looks great in your room.
The blue dresser with the blue walls is inspired; I'm definitely going to file it away for a future project. It looks like Yves Klein Blue from kt.color; is it?
I LOVE the green drapes against the blue wall; just beautiful. This is a really nicely done apartment that looks like it is meant for real people. Fantastic job (and ignore the haters of TV art).
Concur with the 'grown up' comments, but the TV photo seems to say 'My First Apt./Still in College'. The table seems too small for the whole wall + if anything, might have been better to set the TV on the table & let the art alone own the wall. Everything else seems to be pulled together nicely.
i think the tv wall looks great, but the green urn/vase is too "heavy" for that table extension - perhaps the empty space beneath should be filled instead?
well, I can tell you that i love what I see here and that Susan 4260 really knows her, ah, stuff. I also love the designer, my daughter. Hard work and inspiration and the personal pride to keep at it till you get it right will always pay off. Happy Valentine's Day !!!!!
I love this SO MUCH. I am now going to be obsessed with finding those bentwood chairs until they are mine.
I love those chairs too.
I have a gallery wall around my TV too, and I love it. Mine is on a very dark paint color, however, with vintage frames containing mostly old family photos. While I wouldn't say it hides the TV, it does looks much better than it did when it was just an empty wall with a big old 42" TV in front of it..
I also LOVE this place, these are the very colors I live with, greens, blues, browns, guess you can call me earthy! It is not "design-y" or "pop" or anything trendy, just wonderful living space for real people.I think the blueness of the dresser would jar me a little in daily life, and I too love those chairs. The bedroom colors and living room colors are wonderful, great job. Off to visit your site!
I love love love that tree trunk table. I bet it weighs a ton.
And yes, I agree with all the comments about the electric blue dresser. what a gorgeous color. I don't mind the gallery wall with the tv, especially since I've read that the squishiness is just the angle of the photo. However, I think I would like it more if it was all lined up at the bottom and perhaps had more pictures rather than just a few scattered around the tv.
Lovely! In regards to the TV/gallery wall photo- no complaints from me in regards to the artwork. I do dislike the books on the console though, particularly the ones on the lower shelf on the DVD player (and VHS?). It looks a bit busy to me, and I think removing the books, to a small bookcase somewhere, would be a bit more ideal. Otherwise, superb job!
I don't think it's the art around the TV so much as it's what's going on under the TV. The table (bench?) is too lightweight and not long enough. It also looks very cluttered, and the green vase on the right is on an extension of the top which makes it look like it's about to tip the whole thing over.
I'd go with a sideboard type thing (buffet or credenza, whatever you wanna call it) with closed front where I could stash all that stuff on the top. Then maybe hang bigger, bolder art around the TV. The TV itself is very big and bold---a large solid black mass---and it overpowers all the little lightweight stuff around it. You need large, solid things to balance it in this composition.
Personal taste aside, where would one put art/tv in a 1-bedroom Manhattan apartment where wall space is not infinite? Kitchen, bathroom, bedroom???????
Get a grip, folks. We Manhattanites are major explorers in utilizing space. This is APARTMENT THERAPY, not McMansions!
Oh my gosh, who knew the tv wall would cause such a ruckus. I am going to address some of the comments, not to be defensive, but maybe people will find it interesting, I don't know.
First, the credenza was a thrift shop find. The piece jutting out kinda bugged me and I toyed with having the contractor even it up, but the client didn't mind it. Normally there is a firkin bucket that sits under there and balances things out. However it was competing with the Albini ottoman in this shot, so was moved during styling. As far as the size of the art, we had some existing pieces and the top pieces are pretty close to the molding. Sure the TV could be lower, but its not. Having the TV on this wall makes it viewable from either side of the room (it extends and tilts) and it is also not the first thing staring you in the face when you enter the apartment. However, the rest of the space is pretty edited and I didn't want things feeling too perfect or pristine. The client leans toward classic tastes, but is still young, in their 30s. Books, books, everywhere books. The client is a voracious reader. I would find opened New Yorkers and books all over the place. I filled the shelves in the office, which you can see in photos on my website, AND I edited out stacks of books which are stored in a cabinet. However, this is part of who the client is, so I didn't care to hide the books in the living space. Also, the art relates to the client. The abstract photo was taken in Menorca, part of the client's family heritage. The abstract water color is titled Central Park, which is nearby. The lighthouse drawing is a remembrance of the family summer house. The architectural drawing was a gift from the client's sister and the painting above was done by her. I hope the client feeling these personal touches outweighs any concern over how perfect or imperfect it looks. Phew, I think that is it for the TV wall.
The paint on the walls in the bedroom may read a little blue or purple, it has those undertones, but it is gray. The room gets tons of sun and so it does read really gray most of the time. It is Benjamin Moore Dior Gray. The Lane dresser was done up in BM California Blue. It is bright, but really keeps that room from being too heavy and serious. It also pulls the blue out of the rug, which I may have to return and steal one day! Plus, the client spends most of the time in the main living space.
@galval you have good taste. That Drexel armoire is awesome, love that you still have yours. I too love the tree trunk table base - it is massive and does weigh a ton. It cost more to ship than to purchase. If anyone knows who makes those bentwood chairs, let me know. I love them too! Recently saw a restaurant full of them in a movie and gasped out loud.
Thanks again for all the comments. I am always down for a discussion, happens all the time with clients and keeps me on my toes. Resources and info on all the rooms will go up on my website journal this weekend jilldanyelle.com
Have a great weekend!
The living room and dining room are 100% my taste. I even have my tv set up the same way, as part of a gallery, which I love because then it blends in with the artwork. The only thing that bother me is the contrast between the wall color and curtains in the bedroom. Otherwise, this is one of the best I've seen on AT, really love it!
I love everything about this home. I could and would change this or that, but I love everything about it. It is beautiful and comfortable.
I love the decor but not the tv area. You've hung very nice artwork but the big black tv takes away from it.
Jill, what a beautiful balance of lightness and the more substantial. I would think your clients would be deeply satisfied with your understanding of what makes a space calm, livable, and interesting. As others have said, I particularly love those dining chairs, the rugs, the blue! the kilim bench, the eucalyptus in the blue vase, all containers and tables. Well done.
I mean this in the most complimentary way possible: It doesn't look like a decorator did this at all. It really looks like it's evolved over time with the residents. I am particularly picky when it comes to UWS apartments, as it hits close to home. I don't think anyone's mentioned this, but I really love the near-matching (?) rugs in the living and bedrooms: in modestly-sized NY apts having similar rugs allows the rest of the room to be drastically different without it jarring the senses when you quickly move from one to the other. I'm also really impressed and surprised that I like the blue dresser. I rarely go for the brightly painted furniture, but it works in this room. I just wish I could figure out why it looks so good in that particular context.
This is the most fantastic use of space and color. The designer should be commended for the intricate placement of all components, making this one of the most comfortable looking small apartment I've ever seen. I even like the art around the TV. What a beaut!
