According to a new report, this cute shower curtain will release more than 100 volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, into the air in your home...
That's not good news for those who defend vinyl as safe, cheap, and affordable. But for the rest of us, it's a breath of fresh air... and justification to spend a few more dollars on any alternative shower curtain. We blogged a linen one a while back.
Despite the alarmist photography—does anyone really hang a shower curtain with baby in tow?—the Center for Health, Environment & Justice study looks like it was properly conducted, though we'd like to see larger-scale data: were these particularly poisonous shower curtains, or are the levels of chemicals including toluene, ethylbenzene, and a bunch of other nasties, actually low in this sample?
Now, we're also curious about other vinyl products, such as vinyl flooring. Do they put as much stuff into the air?
