Why is it stylish to sit in wire chairs?

Hmmm. Not sure I'd call the "classic" shot "classic."

Not to nit-pick, but what is the point of hanging pictures below table-level? Also, wouldn't tall people hit their heads on the lamp when walking through the door? Seems awkward.

The modern to look at, the classic to sit in.

I much much much prefer the classic. I'm ALL about the comfort.

That "wire chair" has been stylish since 1952 ;-) It usually has a cushion, and is actually very comfortable.

The wire chair has been produced since the 1950's probably because it is both stylish and comfortable.

can i get the comfie chairs from classic and the lemons from modern? and get rid of the photos below the level of the table. and the lamp altogether, while we're at it.

It's a bit odd to call this "classic" vs. modern," as both photos use an iconic mid century modern lamp (the Arco from 1962) and a table with a metal base that looks borrowed from 1950's Arne Jacobsen design. Also, modern doesn't have to be all uncomfortable hard edges. As noted above, the chairs are missing their usual cushions. I'll also add my vote about getting rid of the photos below the table.

What, you change two chairs and a mirror and its a whole new style? I don't think they look different enough to vote on as completely separate looks.

I'm more a modern girl, but I went with classic - those wire chairs look uncomfortable!

That's actually an Acro knock-off, not the original design. I agree that the chairs, paired with the cushions, are very comfortable.

The modern room looks cold while the so called "classic" room looks much more inviting.

Is it me or the only difference are the bertoia chairs (lacking cushions!) the sole difference. The lighting/color-temperature is different as well but that's just changing a bulb or maybe even turning it on.

So the question is comfortable chairs or uncomfortable chairs (Bertoia)?

i would never sit in those wire chairs, but i still voted modern! SO THERE!

I agree with platypus. It looks like the same room with different chairs and a tidier table setting.

Well, seems to me the purpose of the two looks, though I might be wrong, is to demonstrate how a few subtle changes make a room have a different flavor. If that were your room and you were looking for chairs, this gives a sense of what different options do to the space. Let's not get all agitated that it's not a total makeover -- I don't think that was the goal. (The mirrors in the "distant" space make a differenece inthe visual weight of the rooms too, and I agree that the "classic" feels more comfortable to me.)

I've got grid work on my back side from my insistence on being modern. Not. I'd rather be comfortable even if it means being called classic. Those wire chairs remind me of girls who try to claim that thongs actually are comfortable once you get used to them...

No one would actually use those chairs without a cushion. I voted modern though because the other chairs are ugly.

Apparently in the 'classic' room we are allowed to eat and have a nice glass of juice, while in the 'modern' room we may only suck lemons and read a book. No contest.

That said, the moods of the rooms are pretty much the same. Except that in the back room they replaced a window with a mirror??

it seems that the only difference between the rooms is the seating. even the photos on the wall are the same placement and even the exact photos (clouds.)

One of these things is not like the other one of these things just does not belong. Is this one of those contests to spot the differences? I see a lamp in the modern by the mirror in the room beyond where there is a huge cushioney pillow in 'classic'. Is that it? Do I get a prize if I send it in?

This is more the difference between a Summer look and a Winter look. In August, the wire chairs would be lovely. In December, plopping down in them while wearing your PJs would be better than coffee for waking you up!

All I really see different are the chairs and the lack of dishes on the table in the "Modern" shot - everything else is exactly the same (Eames Table, Castiglioni Arco Lamp, prints on the wall...)

The bertoia chairs are indeed surprisingly comfortable and they make the room feel airy and cool. If they had, for example, some orange cushions on, you would have all voted for modern.

I chose modern (duh) but not because of the bertoia chairs. I much prefer a non-upholstered chair for food. To me, food & fabric just dont mix. I would have chosen Jacobsen 7 chairs to match the table a bit, or Cherner chairs for the wood.

In the grander scheme, modern is simpler, less visual clutter, usually smaller scale, which makes it ideal for apt/urban living.

But in this example, I wish there were more differences than just the chairs.

Oh for heaven's sake...so many experts. They are both fun in their own way.
