Would you guess that the pretty and delicate wall decoration above was made using paper doilies and thumbtacks?
The result looks to us like a field of poppies. We love the various sizes of paper doilies and bright orange thumbtacks at each center. Imagine how this "field of flowers" would flutter when you pass by. So pretty.

Easy to guess, as this exact photo has been all over the blogosphere -- including AT on Oct. 1, 2008.
I am absolutely crazy for this. push pins and doilies? how simple, how clean... how delightful!
Yes, I've seen this photo numerous times now.
Came back today...after a long-ish break from the boredom...to another repost...which confirms why I think I've become bored with AT. Bye.
lovely.
Seriously, the "been there, done that" quality AT has is getting kind of grating.
I hadn't seen this until today, and I think it looks great. For someone on a super tight budget, something simple like this is totally do-able.
Beautifuuuuuul!
I also made some wall art for myself with thumbtacks... and a few hundred feet of thread.
I don't think of poppies when I see this. I think of the tedious task of trying to spackle all the holes after I get tired of looking at dusty doilies and orange thumbtacks.
@sub-culture: That is so cool! Great job.
I wonder how good this looks up close.
This looks like a project better done on a stretched canvas or sheet of foamcore rather than directly on the wall. That way you could incorporate the additional colour or texture of a fabric backing and avoid putting hundreds of holes in your wall.
"Seriously, the "been there, done that" quality AT has is getting kind of grating."
If a magazine like Metropolitain Home did this many repeats, they'd be out of business by now.
Oh, Wait...
sub-culture that picture looks so good ! is there a place i could get more designs?
It looks like Tod Boontje's kindergarden project.... cute idea...criminal for the wall.
Maybe applied to a branch shape wire would get a more "finished" look.
@amed studio: I think that putting it on foamcore or canvas is missing the point of "wall art"... there's a distinctly different aesthetic feel to something that's applied directly to a large surface vs hung up, that's why I think people get off on it. And, really, my design is 90 pinholes pushed halfway into the wall -- small enough to simply paint over vs spackling/painting over gaping holes from anchors.
@petrofoam: google "string art cardioid" (cardioid is the geometric curve of what I did, essentially two connected points traveling around a circle at different speeds) and you'll find tons more examples of different patterns.
LOVE!!!!!!!!
also think about using cofee filters and water color! you could die them shades of purples and blues and contrast it with the red or orange center!!!
