Q: I just bought this furniture set and need to figure out a wall color. This will be in a small bedroom in a shared apartment and right now the walls are painted a bright, light orange color. I actually like the color and it makes the color of the wood pop but I'm afraid I'll be tired of it quickly. I'll be spending most of my time at home in the room so perhaps something more soothing would be better? The room has two huge south-facing windows, so it gets plenty of light. Also, I'm 27, so I want the room to look fresh; I have a feeling this furniture could look really dated when styled wrong.

Awesome find on the furniture! I think a complex, but youthful green would make for a good warm/cool mix in the room. Something like Ben Moore's Dill Pickle (2147-40).
i'm feeling a bluey grey. and i wouldn't worry about that furniture looking dated, whatever color you choose.
Since the wood is also orange-y, like the walls, it's an awful lot of quite warm color in a south facing room.
Why not try a cooler shade on the walls for a more serene look? Maybe something in the grey family (I'm a huge fan of B. Moore's Revere Pewter for making wood look fantastic and Stonington Grey is nice, too), or a blue grey (Silver Cloud is pretty) or a greeny grey (B. Moore's Silver Fern is also a favorite).
Any of these should be nice with the wood. Blue is opposite orange on the color wheel, so something in bluey/greeny grey-ey family will make the wooden furniture pop, if that's what you want.
Since the wood is a warm orangey coulour it would be nice combined with something opposite like a grey-blue.
The furniture is Super! You are young! We are talking paint here. Try samples first. Go for what you like and if you don't like it, change it. As for looking dated (too "granny", too juvenile) that will depend on how you style the room as a whole more than the paint color. Don't worry so much!
Another vote for the blue grey - Behr has one called Serene that I used in my old bedroom and LOVED, but I love a good pale green, too! Lovely pieces, by the way.

Since you like the color it is now, keep it! When you get tired of it, then I would revisit the comments and try some of the suggested samples on the walls to see what you love.
I had a room with similar colored furniture and used an amazing orange called "tiger eye" from sherwin williams. It was fabulous, but you are right... the bright color can get a little stale.
However... I did just see this house tour image and it made me think of your post: http://gallery.apartmenttherapy.com/assets/0276/2834/joi-18.2_rect540.jpeg
Using great pops of color, like those lamps in the link could really kick youth into those awesome pieces you have. I love that the dark neutral wall plays up the color of the furnishings. You could have a lot of fun with accessories and art instead of making the room focus the wall color. Hope that helps :)
im all for rose color........
I would never paint over the original finish! You'll never get it back and the paint you choose now may look dated in a very short time. If the furniture needs some touching up, I'd look into restoration. Painting over the original finish decreases the value of the furniture too. I would focus on using brightly-coloured textiles and accents to cheer up the room. I have a mid-century modern bedroom set with a teak finish. My walls are painted a light blue, trim, bedding, and curtains are white, and I used lots of white and some pink and tan accents. It looks very airy, light, and peaceful and the teak finish is perfectly complemented. Whatever you choose, good luck! Enjoy the redo!
Oops, I just realized I misread the question (I should have finished my coffee before posting!) Speaking from my experience in having furniture with a similar tone to it, I suggest a light blue with just a teeny hint of grey in it. That has really made my teak furniture stand out and the blue is a nice, relaxing colour for the bedroom.
Look at the fabric or art that you're putting in the room. That will give you direction.
Like ljgfromof said, just try stuff. Then tweak it. Paint samples are a GREAT idea. I almost always sample colors before I pick. Whatever looks good in one room can look completely different in another, with different flooring, ceiling height, window orientation. Just put a couple of blobs of different colors up on the wall (better than putting them on cardboard) - the cost of samples is nothing compared to the cost of either repainting a room or worse, hating the room and not repainting.
Same goes with decor. Try stuff. Then change it. Think of your place is a big doll house. Have fun!
Nice set. It's going to look terrific.
Thank you, everyone! Looks like I'm going to be headed to the paint store for some blue-grey samples this weekend. :) It's a little scary starting from scratch (I have no other furniture or decor, having lived in furnished apartments or with family throughout graduate school), so I really appreciate your expert opinions. I'm also open to curtain ideas for those big windows if you want to go crazy!
Definitely a grey tone. It will keep it modern and make sure it's a cool grey.
NY Emily, don't be scared! Enjoy the process of making your home yours. It is a bit daunting at first but have faith in yourself to create a lovely home for you and yours! Check out Ikea's selection of white curtains. They have 98" length which you can have "puddle" on the hardwood floor. It looks very chic but not fussy at all. My condo is a little dark so I used white curtains because they accent the light and make the place look bigger and brighter. I have beechwood laminate in my living room and the sheer white curtains puddle nicely on the floor and look so pretty. The main thing is that you surround yourself with things that you love. Good luck and have fun with the process!
How come none of the posters' names are listed, just the date?
OK, I see the names now. Thx.
