A few years ago, I discovered how fascinating maps can be to kids while visiting my four-year-old niece. Though we were surrounded by toys and colorful children's books, she spent an inordinate amount of time with the battered old car atlas we had brought inside with our bags. The fact that it was an over-sized gazetteer surely had something to do with it--the large colorful pages covered with lines and squiggles and letters were irresistible, and she quickly learned to pick out land, water, roads and even railroad tracks. Figuring out where you are is quite a thrill (at any age) and nothing will help your child find their place in this wide world better than a big map on their bedroom wall. There are many aimed specifically at kids. Here are a few standouts.
- 1 Children's Map of the World by Dinos ($21.29)
- 2 Instant Wall Sticker Decal by Hyundae ($12.21)
- 3 Cloth Map by Wonder World ($131.31)
- 4 Interactive Talking World Map by International Playthings ($30.84)
- 5 Prehistoric World Map by Dinos ($15.29)
- 6 Around the World Carpet by Circletime ($307.49) not a wall map, obviously, but too good to ignore
- 7 Map of the Solar System by Dinos ($14.95)

What about good maps of the U.S. for hanging on walls?
I intentionally focused on world (and out of this world) maps for this post. If readers are interested I can do another post on maps of the United States, there are some good ones out there!
Anyone know where I can get a map custom sized? I want to cut it up for some door panels.
Could you do a post reviewing globes? There are so many to chose from and most of them have very poor reviews. I'd love to get a nice one for my kids.
ek76, you read my mind. Since this month's focus for Ohdeedoh is learning at home, I had a globe round up on my to-do list to complement the map round up. Stay tuned!
JudiAU, try www.geoprinter.com. Good luck.
The company who makes the first map makes a really great animals of the world map that my preschooler loves. It's very fun and educational. They sometimes sell it at a discount at Costco.
