The Wall Unitizer is the ultimate landing strip — and home office, and bookshelf, and display cabinet. A custom storage and living solution for a family on Manhattan's Upper East Side, the built-in unit designed by architecture firm HWKN wraps around the walls of the entry and family room uniting the space and providing a custom solution for nearly everything normally reserved for traditional stand-alone furniture.

Besides looking amazingly cool, the Wall Unitizer includes:

  • bench to put on shoes
  • seemingly endless bookshelves and cabinetry
  • place for keys, mail, mobile phones, etc.
  • mirror
  • home office with integrated cork board and task lighting
  • file storage drawers
  • display shelves
  • integrated space for media and entertainment needs

The unit is primarily made of MDF. Check out the small details that make a big difference in the success of this design:

  • use of angled supports near the floorboards create the feeling of more space — not less

  • diversity of shapes and angles creates a unique interior texture, downplaying the boxiness of the rooms

  • massive scale of the Wall Unitizer anchors the room

  • single color unites the space and allows the owners' own objects and collections to be the focal point
