In our final look at large scale digital photo printing services, we take a look at Wallhogs. The company's main line of business involves taking your pictures and turning them into vinyl decals that can be stuck onto almost any surface. What makes them unique is that you can specify what parts of your image you want in the decal and what you want cut out. And while vinyl decals seem a tad lowbrow for those of you who take interior design seriously, there is a way to use the material while avoiding dorm room appeal.
Wallhogs offers two decal options, including a white reusable vinyl that's made for indoor use only and is best adhered to a smooth flat surface. It can be moved up to five times. They also offer a Photo Tex version that's both waterproof and UV resistant, which allows you to place your decals outdoors. It can be adhered to nearly any surface including brick and stucco, and can be moved up to 200 times. For both styles images can be blown up from 12-inches ($13/$20) to 84-inches ($90/$120).
Now for the fun part. Since vinyl decals don't require mounting hardware, you can really get creative on where you place these. Parts of the home that are hard to customize -- toilets, refrigerators, shower doors -- can get a small face lift without spending a ton of money, and more importantly, without making permanent changes. The latter is especially beneficial for renters who have to return their homes to the way they were when they move.
We used our vinyl decal to brighten up our boring Kenmore refrigerator. To install, all you have to do is remove the backing and then slowly place your decal where you want it. An included squeegee helps you push air bubbles out, and since the backing is low tack, you can reposition without worrying about ruining the print (or your surface!)
Pros: A great non-traditional option to display photos. Print quality was decent, but you aren't going to get as much detail as some of the other services reviewed.
Cons: It's vinyl, so how you execute it will determine how well it looks.
