After being scored, scraped, soaked, stripped, and banished from our homes for nearly three decades, wallpaper is enjoying a sweet revenge. Whereas easy-to-remove wall decals were once all the rage, we now see people in droves opting for a patterned accent wall for the nursery. I have extremely mixed feelings about wallpaper's resurgence. Even though I like most of the patterns above, when they're hung in actual rooms they can look cluttered and screamy. In my opinion there's definitely an art to choosing wallpaper, and it's an art most people aren't a bit trained in. The winners above are #3 and #7.
I like a lot of those. I think the key is in small doses, and let it breathe; don't crowd it with pictures, etc. I love the flamingo wallpaper. It has a wonderland feel to it.
Patterns: They're not just for ancient history anymore. Do consider having a baby -- it will be the perfect cover for decorating with something other than paint. If challenged, be ready to say "It was just one wall, guys! And in the kid's room -- not in a serious part of the house! I promise it won't happen again! Especially since all my sophisticated friends say 'That wallpaper looks like my GRANDmother's house.'"
Many of these are elegant, pretty and playful, although a couple of the decorators don't seem to know when to stop.
Tip: Order a couple of extra rolls, stash them away, and present them to your child on his/her 30th birthday, perhaps using some as wrapping paper. By then, the sight of the inevitably beloved pattern will bring tears to the child's eyes. I have very fond memories of the patterns of the quilts and curtains and wallpapers of my childhood, and I'm lucky enough to have a decent-sized length of fabric from a dress my mother made for herself when she was pregnant with me in 1960. It's a beautiful monochrome pattern; it resurfaced in the '70s and she made herself a couple more dresses in other colors. If I could find it today, I'd definitely incorporate it into my decor.
I'm still traumatized from taking down wallpaper in our old rental. It was old school wallpaper too and it almost destroyed the walls under it. NEVER again. Plus I'm one of those people who gets tired of patterns very quickly so if I need to have something in a pattern, it better be interchangeable.
The title of this post cracks me up, for some reason. I love it.
It was only a matter of time. I have an entry and a half bath I wouldn't mind doing, along with the one solid wall in our sleeping porch. Unfortunately, there are so many great options that by the time I commit to anything, it will probably be back out of style again.
In the meantime, I am waiting for everybody to finish painting their oak cabinets white so oak will come back in style and I won't have to redo my kitchen. Hey, if it can happen with wallpaper and brass...
I watched my parents have to deal with removing wallpaper in several houses growing up, and I think I internalized it as a big no-no (even though they also put UP their fair share of wallpaper too!) I'll happily paint an intricate, wallpaper-like mural, but I don't think I could bring myself to install even the loveliest of lovely wallpaper (I'm talking to you Ferm.)
I'm in love with all of these. I never thought I'd ever use wallpaper but really like the idea of an accent wall like this.
I adore all of these, too. And @BeeforBrian - great idea!!
I love new wallpaper! So many options to inject a little colour and pattern! I love Rosa's room, not so much for the wallpaper but for the yellow crib and cozy lived-in feel.
I know a excellent wallpaper shop on line www.deco-indoor.com where you can find the best brands : Elitis, Arte International, Sahco, Nobilis...
I tested many times and always successfully
Does anyone know what the wallpaper brand/style is on the photo #11 - bottom row, far left? Floral wallpaper with the two beds + round circle rugs. Is it still in production?
Thanks!
Best,
Laura
