The Ionator by Activeion is a hand-held, on-demand chemical-free cleaning tool that converts tap water into ionized water for powerful dirt-removing and bacteria-killing capabilties–no soap required! Sound too good to be true? See what it is and how it works, including a video with Bill Nye, after the jump.
The Ionator by Activeion is a fancy looking squirt bottle to which you add tap water. A chemical process takes place just before the water leaves the bottle (the process is explained below). There are three models, ranging from one designed for home use ($169) to one designed for the cleaning professional ($329). All handle multiple surfaces including glass, stainless steel, natural stones, and carpets/fabrics, but the Pro versions have larger water chambers and add Whiteboards to their list of surfaces.
The "on-demand" cleaning and sanitation ability of the Ionator is said to be a daily-use cleaner on most surfaces, and kills bacteria. I actually have a water purifier (the MSR Miox) that works in a similar fashion but requires a salt solution to be included in the ionization process.
The Ionator works by applying a slight electrical charge to tap water, which is then then forced through an ion exchange membrane creating an oxygen-rich mixture of nano-bubbles. The ionized water can now more easily bind to dirt, making it easier to wipe away. See diagram below.
