We were strolling down the laundry aisle in Big W the other day and came across these colourful 28 litre buckets that are perfect for the ‘bucket in shower water re-use’ concept. It’s been mentioned before, but to quickly re-cap, you put a bucket in the shower while you’re waiting for the water to heat up and catch otherwise wasted water to use in your garden.
The simple design and nice colours of these buckets mean you won’t have to sacrifice all style for substance and at AUD$8.98 a pop, they’re easy on the pocket too. We’re curious, does anyone re-use shower water for anything beyond watering the garden, and if so, what for?

I want to start re using shower water, since in my new apartment it takes ages for the hot water to reach my shower... but, as I said, I live in an apartment, so the garden is not a possible destination for that water. But what about pouring it down the toilet the next time you need to flush?
The bucket handles don't seem sufficient for the weight of 28L of water. I'd repurpose them as a planter, a kid's toy bin, or a garage/garden bin/trashcan.
Besides gardening, I repurpose pre-shower water for handwashing delicates, scrubbing the tub (rinse the tub with bucket water instead of turning on the tap), or soaking dishes (stop up a sink and cover the dishes with bucket water).
I'd love to catch my shower water (all of it) and use it in the garden. There should be some kind of way to do this yourself, although I'm having a hard time figuring one out. All I would want to do is catch the water, then empty it out onto my garden manually in buckets when I water my container plants.
You'll slop water all over in those--the handles aren't long enough to support a full bucket. A better idea would be to install a tankless water heater.
