While the Waveform is designed as a shelf, we instantly saw it as a desk. The desk, perhaps, we would have purchased if a) we had wall space and b) we hadn't gone for the Offi Wave instead.
One of the main reasons it appeals to us is the length: at 22" long, it makes for a very minimal laptop or bill-paying station, which is often called for in a closet office or nook next to the fireplace. The other reason is the price: $350 is a lot for a shelf, but stays in contention as a desk.

It's more furniture to me than shelf, too, so the price does not seem outrageous.
I just took a look at the price and the website, and it's not as expensive as I thought. (But, I was kinda lookng to cover 88" of space. Could get too pricey for me.) Hmmm... may have to reconsider some things...

BB, I imagine there is a mounting bracket in the middle section, maybe where the lip first curves towards the wall? Sadly, that would interfere with the appearance if viewed from the side.
I have two of these shelves in my office. The mounting bracket is pretty thin, and they're not as wide as the shelf so they're pretty hidden. There is at least an 1.5" on either side of the bracket so you can't see it. You have to look pretty hard to get a glimpse of them, maybe by pressing your head against the wall...
I imagine you could also store books or magazines in the slot below. Very attractive but the price is a bit hefty.
I'm with everyone else... Ikea should come out with a version.
You could probably hack up a DIY version, using white ABS and an ABS bender -- Make magazine has a couple of articles on bending ABS.
