Q: The second bathroom of our new home has large black and white tile flooring. The tile is in great condition and looks new but the colors/ pattern just doesn’t work for us, especially since it will be our daughter’s bathroom, decorated in multicolored polka dots. We're working with little to no budget for expensive remodels, but looking for advice and suggestions in covering or changing it somehow.

White Enamel Flatwa...
Why force a design that doesn't work with what you already have? Her heart is set on multi-colored polka dots?
Maybe try a bright colored carpet to cover a portion of it and then coordinate that with a few matching colored accessories. Black, white and bright pink can work well together. Or they also make peel and stick floor tiles which you may be able to put right on top of these. I kind of like the floor this way though.
Cover it up with a big, round bright rug, like this one - http://www.crateandbarrel.com/bed-and-bath/bath-rugs/reversible-teal-round-bath-rug/s224114
It's hard to tell, but it doesn't look like the biggest bathroom. A splash of color on the floor in the form of a really big polka dot, plus some elements of black (like these black and white polka dot drawer pulls - http://www.etsy.com/listing/29869311/black-and-white-hand-painted-drawer) will pull the black together without having to change the tile.
Black, white, and red or green also can look good together.
vapidtoast is right - You can't always get what you want.
Toss a couple of round colorful throw rugs on the floor and call it a day.
get big polka dot decals and put one in each black and white square.
www.whatisblix.com or online search for polka dot decals in the right size. They are removable and won't hurt the tile.

amvolpe beat me to it but was thinking non-slip tub stickers instead of decals, maybe hold up better?

Why don´t you paint multicolored polka dots on all the existing tiles and a few on the cabinet doors?
DIY adhesive backed tiles right over the exisiting (ok, not the ideal solution but at least you get a pattern of your choice and it will be cheap)
but if it were me, I would try to work out a scheme with the current tiles
To me, the black and white tile just reads as a neutral, like a wood floor. Like others have said, I would throw on a big circle rug (I think I've seen them in IKEA or FLOR) and add polka-dots/colors elsewhere. For example, change out the cabinet knobs to 2 different colored ball-shaped knobs, paint the mirror a bright color, and do a polka-dot shower curtain.
I think this is a great canvas for a kids bathroom. I wouldn't go too crazy specializing it to whatever look she's into now- she will want something different in a few years. Black and white checks are classic, as others have said, keep it calm but add a pop of color with good sized solid colored (shag chenille is cheap and fun) rugs.
Ditto on the big bright circular rug.
Old fashioned ice cream parlors traditionally had these floors anchoring a multi-colored candy-extravanganza decor - maybe use white curliqued metal wall shelves, etc. to pick up that aesthetic.

(Or else maybe you could sell the kid on changing to an Alice-in-Wonderland Queen of Hearts' Chess Game theme? XD)
don't see the need to remove the tile. there are a few different options - big, round, brightly colored rugs. or (removable) adhesive polka dots - either one big one in the middle of each square (as somebody suggested above) or smaller ones at corners where the squares meet. or even leaving it as-is w/ just a regular brightly colored bath mat would work. it's pretty classic.
I agree, in fact I was surprised to hear the thought that the checkerboard wouldn't go, as I think it's a great floor for a bright kids bathroom.
However, considering you don't like it, I would just get a couple larger bath mats in colors that your daughter likes. To not compete with the floor, I would do the polka dots in a more simplified color palette (just one or two colors) and try to incorporate those colors with B&W to pull in the floor. Also keep the size/number of the dots and the tile size in mind so it's not overwhelming. For example, do a few little things that incorporate dots on a small scale (like a couple hand towels, the knobs like other people mentioned, etc) and then maybe throw in a splash of much larger dots through a couple oversized decals or shower curtain, and then keep everything else solid colors. You get the dots and colors you want without overwhelming the space and not spending money changing the floor for a kids bathroom.
I would not change the floor, it is hard work and an unnecessary expense. I would, however, find a nice polka dot mat to put down. I also agree with RNM, black and white check can go with just about anything.
wow, I think the black and white checkerboard is the perfect foil for the polka dots!! Contrast is what will give the dots some *pow*.
Another vote for leaving the floor. I think it would look great with brightly coloured polka dots. IKEA definitely has round bath mats--I got a red one a couple of months ago that's about 3 feet across.
I actually couldn't think of a cuter floor to go with bright polka dots. I think it's pretty whimsical.
EVeryone has said it but even before I read their comments I thought of how wonderfully this would go with polka dots.
One more to agree with the notion that black and white checkerboard is perfect to go with polkadots.
Hm. Paint the black tiles the different colors of your polka dots! Or one of the colors, maybe a yellow so it fades in the white rather than be so contrasty.
You could also just paint the whole floor white, just right over the tiles. Then cover with some bright colored rugs. What's the worst that can happen? You replace it anyway.
Count me in for leaving the tiles as is; i also consider it a neutral. It's classic and will be great to have as she gets older and you change the decor -- nothing snappier than a black and white floor with color on the walls (try Hermes orange or kelly green). In the meantime, work in some black polka dots to the mix on the wall -- red, green, yellow, blue, orange, black. will tie into the mirror as well. You can mix up the towel colors to pick up on the dots. It may not be the exact palette you were going for but it will be playful and colorful and fun.
The best designs come from having constraints, like this floor. You'll come up with something much better and cooler and more creative than if you were just waving your magic wand.

So, to recap:
1. The tiles "don't work for you".
2. You lack the flexibility to alter your vision to embrace them.
3. You have no money to change them.
4. You hold the bizarre belief that, besides the relevant bedroom, other rooms of your home have to be re-decorated to suit the undeveloped tastes of your child.
With all that understood, here's my advice: your little princess will not be in therapy in 2031 because her private bathroom was insufficiently cohesive in its decor. Add a few cheap polka dotted accessories if you like, then get yourself a nice relaxing beverage.
A floor like that goes really well with bright, fuchsia pink. So I suggest a pink shower curtain and accessories with pink polkadots.
It also goes with a lot of other colours, so keep it. One day your daughter will be seeing spots, and not in a good way.
I second the Alice in Wonderland theme but in a very understated, not too literal way. Maybe use oversized teacups as holders for hair accessories, some heart-shaped cupboard handles, the blue of Alice's dress for the walls... look at some Tim Walker/shona Heath photos for inspiration.
I am just going to echo once again the sentiment that black and white checkerboard tile floor is the PERFECT floor for a polka dotted bathroom.
I think if you throw down bath rug(s), round or not, that pull down the colors of the dots, you'll be surprised just how amazing it looks!
Patterns don't clash if they are set far apart. Maybe a horizontal band of polka dots at the top of the wall or in the middle would be just enough to get a polka dotted feel. Just not the whole wall.
I have one thing to contribute: Mary Engelbreit. Look her up with Google Images or something. If you use bright solid colors, black and white checks work with anything -- They set off the other colors like nothing else!
Don't change the floor!
ELOISE AT THE PLAZA HELLLLLOOOOO! Take a look at what they have done there. Black and white floors, pink walls, im sure if you added polka dots in the right way it would look fabulous as well. Nothing says little girl more than Eloise at the Plaza.
