But first: we want to give a huge shout-out to ALL of this year's intrepid Greenest Thumb contestants. This was AT:SF's first contest ever. We're a new community, so we know it took guts to put yourself out there. It's never easy being green in public.
Dan, Elka, Kat, Kristin, Psymonetta and Samantha: we applaud both you and your gardens. And now, without further ado, we sing the praises of the greenest thumb...
Elka from Oakland! Elka's dramatic story of ladybugs vanquishing aphids clearly captured the imagination of many an AT:SF reader. Not to mention those tempting-looking organic strawberries and blueberries. For a relaxing break, we recommend a tour of Elka's Organic Oakland Garden!
We also want to recognize the other finalists, Kristin and Dan, and Samantha, whose amazing abilities to conjure nature in limited spaces kept us green with envy all of June. (Elka, Samantha, Kristin and Dan: please send us your addresses so that we can mail you your nursery gift certificates!)
Now: there are some allegations that Elka stuffed ballots, but (and though we know our technology's far from perfect) we think it's more likely that Elka simply campaigned. By visiting the blog and taking the time to look at Elka's contest entry, her friends and family became legitimate members of the AT:SF audience, and we hope they'll return. At any rate, they, like you, deserve to be counted. This is, after all, a competition. Campaigning is part of the game!
Thanks again to everyone who entered and to all the readers who toured, left comments, or voted. We look forward to seeing many more gardens next year! Now stay tuned for news about this month's contest...
