Day #: Friday, January 18...and the weekend of January 19 & 20
Assignment: Weekly Flowers and Bedroom Cleaning
First up, a quick note: we are absolutely, most definitely, without a doubt well past the halfway point of the Cure, which means you are on the downhill ride to the finish line. Take a minute to appreciate all the effort you've invested so far and then, keep on moving forward! This weekend is focused on your bedroom, so without further ado, and at the risk of sounding like a cartoon mom, it's time to "clean your room!"...
In the Eight Step Home Cure, Maxwell reminds us that the bedroom just might be the most important room in our homes. He writes, "It is where you will spend the greatest amount of time when at home and where your health will be most directly affected if you don't sleep well".
So, let's get to it.
This Weekend's Assignment:
• Pick up and display your weekly flowers.
• Give your bedroom a good, deep clean. This should be a very thorough job. The aim is to rid the room of as much dust and potential allergens as possible. Here is a sample guideline deep clean plan:
• Pick up and put away all clothes, books and belongings
• Declutter surfaces (remove change, jewelry, etc and put in proper places)
• Strip the bed
• Launder all bedding, including mattress and pillow covers
• Flip and/or rotate the mattress
• Vacuum out the closet
• Vacuum curtains with brush attachment and/or clean blinds
• Clean windows and mirrors
• Dust all surfaces and wipe down light switches, fixtures and ceiling fan
• Push aside the bed, side tables and dressers and vacuum/clean under them
• Remake the bed
• Enjoy a sound sleep in your freshly cleaned room! And, if you want to take the Cure even further this weekend:
• Do a closet and dresser drawer purge. (Filling up that outbox!)
Now that your room is really clean and more organized, how about making a pact with yourself to always make the bed? It's a habit that really does help to lower stress and up the happy factor. Here's a post to help convince you...
• Make Your Bed! For Productivity, Profit and Peace

Commercial Flour Sa...
I did a serious deep clean of our bedroom a couple of months ago -- I wanted to get the radiator clean before the heat came on for the winter. But we do need to flip our mattress and cleaning the duvet and its cover, so we'll do a sort of deep clean in our bedroom. :)
And our closet is actually in the office/spare room off our bedroom, which I kind of like because it makes our bedroom less cluttered. But I'll give it a dusting too.
I just decluttered our room (which is also my office), so that's taken care of, but it could use a cleaning and a few touchups. Looking forward to having new flowers in the house too!
Last Sunday night I stripped the bed, flipped the mattress, put on a clean mattress pad, put the clean cover on a foam topper that a friend had given me in December, put on clean sheets, flipped the coverlet to the side that I like best, and then slept on a very comfortable bed. A few days later I stripped the bed in my guest room and put on new sheets there. Then I did a load of laundry with the two sets of sheets and the mattress pad. (The only thing I do not like about the new mattress topper is it is foam and I miss the coolness of my mattress, but it was free. I do not want to buy a new mattress for another 1-2 years because I might relocate and would prefer to buy new then either way...also I plan to go from a full to a queen set and do not want the expense now of new linens.)
I also recently bought a cool-mist humidifier, and that is helping me sleep better. I do not wake up with a dry cough now.
This is much needed! It has been too long since we washed our sheets... I'm embarrassed to say. Plus my goal project is the master bedroom closet so I just may do some work on that, as well!
Blitzed my clothes and cosmetics/smellies this Summer (very theraputic), but under the bed storage and my jewelry need a sort out. Will be decorating bedroom this year, so a sort out will stand me in good stead. My outbox is scaring me, I can't beleive I own such junk !
Katie, from a snowy UK, north of London :)
Do you know how loooooooooooooong this is going to take me. My bedroom is the repository for "stuff," since noone sees it when people come over. It's the last thing that gets cleaned, and I usually run out of steam by then.
i hear ya lindsay! crank up some tunes and clean that room! i will too. good luck everyone!
This one's easy. The cleaning crew comes today :)
having only 3 weeks to go in my pregnancy has made me SUPER nesty, so i did our bedroom yesterday. our bedroom is our sanctuary, so it's very clean and tidy, but i still have some pillow cases to wash and that's it! maybe work on the guest room a little. boooo
This already was my weekend plan ... I started yesterday since in my small apartment, the bedroom is also my "storage" space (behind decorative screens).
I'm good to go on this!
This is always done already (deep cleaning, no clutter -- we are on board with the sanctuary idea already). But those bedroom closets... I moved in 2 years ago and have not unpacked 4 boxes that are still in there. So... ugh. Or should I say FINALLY, YAY, the boxes will be gone by Monday.
Does anyone have any tips for selling clothes on craigslist or eBay? I have a lot of classic business clothes in good shape, but I haven't had a job that requires business attire for a couple years.
Well I am rather clean and tidy with my bedroom already but I will dutifully change over my bedlinens to fresh clean new ones, along with the flowers. I will also take down and wash the curtains and re hang them, with some lead weights in the bottom. (thats one of my jobs on the list from Day One. I will also try and upholster my bedroom chest (another job from the list), and sort and clear out under the bed, thats the main "deep-clean" needed in my bedroom... also has anyone ever tried those vacuum sucky bags to flat pack and store clothes.. ? they are amazing!!
I just cleaned my bedroom so this will be a chance to clean the usually passed over things in the room. The curtains, windows and closet floor need some attention. I am also looking forward to purging some clothes.
Today is a snowy day so it will be a perfect day to deep clean the bedroom. I have been washing my mattress pad, sheets and quilt once a week since starting allergy shots 5 years ago. My Dr. says that is the single most important thing you can do to breathe easier. It's a lot of work but worth the effort!
Well this will be easy - I don't have a bedroom! I live in one approx 13 x 26 room that's bedroom, livingroom and studio (with small separate rooms for my kitchen and bathroom). But I will use this as an opportunity to sweep under the bed, and clean out my two closets, located in my bathroom and entry area!
Love these tips! and that bedroom in the photo is gorgeous, loving the wall color although the artwork above the bed is a bit much:) off to buy fresh flowers!
This wi be my day tomorrow as the snow in England means I won't be going anywhere. We can deal with drizzle and rain but snow? Country grinds to a halt.
I'm normally pretty good with making the bed. I get a bit OCD about making sure the duvet hangs evenly on each side.
The big area that needs sorting is my built in closet. I cleared a few things out last night but it really needs a proper purge.
Good luck with the task this weekend everyone!
I'm in snowy UK South of London. How much snow have you got?
I would make my bed in the morning but it is a little lumpy with my husband still lying in it. :) I have yet to convince him to put the "fancy" pillows on the bed in the morning but at least he spreads it up fairly neatly when he gets up.
The bedroom isn't too messy but the bed linens were due a good cleaning. Seems like a good thing for a Saturday afternoon.
So glad this is the official assignment, because it was going to be my big task this weekend anyway! The storage bed arrived earlier this week, and I finally got bedroom furniture out of storage. I'm super excited about not living out of boxes and suitcases any more. You can't imagine how happy I was this morning when I reached and found my glasses on my bedside table instead of on a random patio chair....
I have been looking forward to this weekends Bedroom clean out since I printed out my calendar. Each year for Super Bowl Sunday my girlfriends and I have a SWAPPER Bowl instead. Everyone brings their unwanted clothes, shoes, accessories, knick-knacks, books, etc and we swap. It is still 2 weeks away and I already have 38 girls RSVP'd. This year is going to be great, I'm definitely going to score something good with that many girls! Thanks for kicking off my clean up!!!
So happy Pasadena is supposed to be about 79 degrees this weekend; I can hang all my linens out to dry!
Htrain - I know! I've been freezing all week, and now that the weather's nice, I can let some fresh air in and turn the heat off! We Angelenos (says this Michigan transplant) aren't used to this weather!
In any case, I didn't read the calendar in time to know that this was coming up, so I did my big closet and dresser purge last weekend as it's my BIG project for the Cure! But my husband's dresser and nightstand still need to be cleaned, and we need to wash our walls so we can paint our bedroom and get some nice shades installed. Our bedroom hasn't been nice in years, so my big thing this january/february is to make it a sanctuary.
Problem: It's tiny and we're renting, so don't want to invest too much in new furniture/paint, etc. On the other hand, we were only supposed to live here a year and now it's been 3 (!!), so maybe spending the money would be worth it?
Was wondering when we'd get to (cue dramatic tension music) The Bedroom! Mine isn't as big a job as it would have been a few months ago. I did a complete clothes/shoes purge and sort in order to make a donation to the Big Fat Flea Market, and then in the first Cure weekend I finally bought the organizers I needed to put my clothes closet in order. I'm happy every morning when I open that door.
Still plenty of work to do in the bedroom, however. My smaller closet is still in a mess (jewelry, lingerie, junk I couldn't find another place for ...), my shelves need thinning / organizing, my desk needs decluttering and some repairs ... and I have some boxes of old teaching materials that need to be sorted and filed or trashed. Lots of work! I've got a class on Saturday and an event for the holiday, but I think I can get through all of the work. I've surprised/impressed myself each of the last weekends with how much work I've gotten through, so I'm hoping to stay on that roll!
MamaGoldFront -
Swapper Bowl sounds amazing - such a great name!
When I no longer needed my traditional business attire, I found consignment wasn't worth it because of the commission so I donated my suits and some newer shoes to Dress for Success. Just a thought. http://www.dressforsuccess.org/
Phew. This won't be hard at all for me. I just bought a new mattress 2 weeks ago, so it's still very fresh and clean. I also washed my duvet and pillows at the same time, so they're fresh too. And I put on new bedlinen yesterday - so this is an easy-peasy weekend for me. I'll spend my time unpacking the last boxes from my moving, getting rid of more stuff (hopefully) and make things nice. Oh - and I'm planning on going to IKEA on my day off on Monday....
Gorgeous photo.
Good luck all, have a productive weekend. I will be tackling last weekend's kitchen chores..which will take a LONG time. And this. And the book decluter. Ack. Good thing I have nothing planned.
'MamaGoldFront' That SWAPPER Bowl is one of the best idea's I heard of for ball mad weekend. I think I may try to steal ooops borrow it .Keep up the good work.
What is going on in that photo on the wall?!
That was our big project for the CURE, so we are almost there! Need to spot paint, and clean the blinds and curtains. And decide whether to clean the quilt I made that is on the bed (which is predominantly white--what was I thinking????) and is already falling apart, or purchase a new coverlet type thing...
This sounds so awesome, but it looks like I got the illness that my daughter had earlier in the week. My sinuses are in such agony that I can't even imagine dusting right now. There is some clutter in here that I could clear, and maybe by Sunday I will be well enough to do the deep clean, but today is for staying in bed. It's part way there already, since the first weekend's floor cleaning took care of under the bed stuff, and yesterday's book cleanup took care of another part. Still not looking forward to the closet though. Ugh.
Thanks! Host your own for sure!! After we are all done swapping (and eating & drinking), we bag up all the leftovers and donate to a local charity. Cleaning and helping the community!!
Questions?? FB me!
Here's a link to my event this year: https://www.facebook.com/events/393848924038618/
I'm doing great and keeping up with my list! Time for trying on all my clothes and getting rid of things that don't fit. http://katskull.com/tag/the-january-cure/
Some things I'm way ahead; some things behind or not at all. But, overall, I'm visibly ahead and more than that, satisfied and still motivated to continute to pull or put things together. Downside is three painting projects; oops, four that I discovered I can't find the colors I want locally; so have to plan a trip to the metro area for paint + any other errands. They're a big grrr, because I wanted, expected them to be done 'yesterday'. Still, I'm glad I've got this 'cure' mindset on a cranial front burner.
My bedroom is always tidy but not always clean. We have serious dust bunny issues.
My outboxes runneth over. YAY!!
I have actually been working on my bedroom in small spurts all week. (Yes, it is that bad.) When the weather was superbly nice the other day, I opened the french doors that lead out onto the deck to give the bedroom a nice air out.
Unfortunately I also forgot I left the doors open. So while I was cooking dinner and puzzling over the odd behavior of our cats, I heard a loud noise from the bedroom area. Our raccoon neighbor (who now apparently now has three lovely children) decided to pay the bedroom a visit.
Who knew bedroom cleanups could be such a challenge?
My bed sheets are in the dryer as I type this. They were covered in spit up, compliments of my hungry little burrito. Straightening up may be a bit challenged since my outbox is overflowing and it located in my bedroom. Looks like I will be emptying it this weekend. To cheer me up, I bought some baby's breath from my local grocery store. I share about them here: http://turningithome.blogspot.com/2013/01/babys-breath-in-cold.html
I fell so far behind already.
I think I have a week of stuff to do this weekend.
So this weekend I'll try to get the landing strip cleaned up and organized.
Bring my giant out box to the Goodwill.
Work on my monthly project (decluttering and cleaning my dresser/tv stand)
Hi all,
I am having flowers problems! My apartment is hot and dry, and I do not have control over the heat. The tulips I bought last weekend did not last nearly as long as I recall my mother's cut tulips would last. The leaves get brown and dried out. Same with the previous flowers I bought. Are there any basic cut flowers that can cope better in this environment?
The bedroom itself is looking pretty good already. It does needs a good dusting/vaccum, and maybe I'll even clean the carpets while I'm at it. There's some extra bedding under the bed that needs to be washed and stored in some of those vaccum storage bags I just bought. Those things shouldn't take long at all, I can have that stuff done tonight. It's the closet that needs the most work. I have a big walk-in closet, which is nice. But, it's like a breeding ground for stuff. Clothes still need work, even though i've already got rid of a lot. I have a ton of empty boxes from when I moved in over a year ago. Those need to GO, they take up so much room. Then there's just misc other stuff. Hopefully most of which can just be packed up (in those boxes I have so many of) and sent to goodwill. I'm not going to do the outbox thing with my closet simply because I don't want to wait a week to get it out of my house, I've been sitting on this stuff too long as it is. I would also like to move my dresser into my closet to free up even more room in the bedroom, because I think the less stuff you have in your room, the better you sleep...maybe that's just me.
I'm really looking forward to this one. Since I'm coming in to the cure late, I think this is a good place to start. Then, I can work my way thought the house. :)
the tulips from last weekend only lasted two days, but my $1.99 carnations from the first weekend are still kickin' it. #carnationsareunderrated

OK, OK, I'll wash the woodwork.
My outbox is turning into out-boxes-and-bags!
ladykatey, try alstroemeria or Peruvian lilies. Irises and roses from the first week didn't make it 1/2 week but the alstroemeria bought last Friday are still going strong a week later. Our house is dry, too. Good luck!
I live in a studio apartment, and my "bedroom" is half of my living space sectioned off thanks to my Ikea Expedit. I happened to change my bedding just last weekend, so I don't need to do that again just yet. However, I have been meaning to hang a mirror over the nightstand next to my bed (it's on my Cure to-do list), so I'll get that done over the weekend! I'll also make sure to vacuum allll the way under my bed. To my under-bed storage, also for Ikea, for keeping it neat and organized under there!
Everything else aside, can someone source that rug???
YES! Bedroom was the plan for this weekend already... We have been slowly organizing and purging stuff from our bedroom for the last few months so this will be great to get it finished!
Planning a clothes swap too, found eager readers of French books and magazines to declutter my bedside table, now i need to read all the 40 books I have piled up from the library and return them. Ouch...
If you have time bedroom cleaning is easy, no decision making.
Ditto on the rug!
I guess this means I should stop putting off replacing the lightbulb in my closet! And ugh - finding a jewelry organizing method.
This may be my easiest weekend since beginning The Cure! My bedroom list is quite short, since we stick with our bedroom as our sanctuary; there really is not much to do:
-Vacuum under bed.
-Place shoes in storage container under bed.
-Purchase 2 RIBBA frames and hang pictures above our nightstands.
We just changed linens yesterday, so that task is complete and our clothing purge was done a month ago. I will dust thoroughly and clean the windows; cleaning the windows is something that I sometimes neglect to do in my weekly bedroom clean up.
Since our bedroom is pretty easy this weekend, I will also clean our daughters' bedroom and get my husband to hang their artwork as well.
Have a great weekend everyone!
Avoid storing anything under the bed - it's bad Feng Shui (spelling?). Extra linens can be put under the mattress - between the box spring and mattress if you have a traditional bed. I changed to a platform bed and love it - one less thing (box spring) to deal with. Sleeps great.
I also agree that bedroom stuff/furniture should be minimal - much better sleeping. I only have one closet so everything (including clothes) have to be in it - organization with boxes is the only way.
Thankfully, I am a little ahead of the game with the bedroom! On our first weekend to clean the floors, I stripped the bed, washed all the bedding including the duvet and flipped the mattress. I even cleaned under the bed! So this weekend, I will tackle the dressers, bedside tables and, if I am feeling strong enough, the closet.
I have so much stuff - clothes - that I am hoping I can start parting with half of it. I wish I had a better closet. I am in an apartment and am stuck with the old single bar and one shelf deal. I have a few bins for the self but most of the time, stuff just gets pilled on and I have so many hanging clothes that they are squished on the bar.
Anyone have any suggestions for items I could use in the closet to get organized without a whole closet redo? If I can get rid of a lot of clothes, that will help a lot but wondered if anyone else had this issue.
Good luck everyone this weekend! Another tough one for me, but if the reward is anything like when I finished my kitchen, it is going to be well worth the effort!
In attempting to get rid of clothes I've tried several different methods. One that I tried totally backfired. It was the turn your hanger around as you wear your clothes. Well, I wore all my clothes just so that I wouldn't have to give them up. Even though I didn't like how they felt, and I didn't like how I felt in them. NOW, I've tried this new method I believe I heard right here on the Cure. I ask myself the question "Would I purchase this if I saw it in a store right now"? This method works for me. I have a couple of bags full of clothes I was attached to for no good reason. AND, I can reach and see the clothes I really like. YAY the Cure!!!
Lol @ Pendragon. When we lived in Atlanta, I would often open the doors to our second floor deck as I was cooking dinner. 'Percy the Possum' would march right into the kitchen & grab a snack from the catfood dish maybe 3' from where I was standing at the stove. He became such a regular guest, even the cats ignored him.
Re the bedroom: this is where the rubber hits the road. This is my BIG project for the month. And let me just say...you ain't seen THAT BAD. Boxes on top of boxes of *other people's stuff* plus our own crap piled in the corners because the boxes block our access to the closet we use for storage. The chaos is a result of two family members' estates, both of which have finally been settled so documents can now be shredded. The remaining items will either be shipped to interested extended family or donated. Either way they're outta here come Monday. NotificatIon e-mails were sent, followed by reminders & a final notice. I refuse to feel guilty if someone whines after the fact....I'M TAKING BACK TERRITORY!
Good luck everyone. And keep posting your victories as encouragement. Got my alarm set for dawn & gotta feelin I'm gonna be takin' frequent breaks just to get through the day. I am determined.
Having a kid makes this twice as hard! My bedroom is in surprisingly good shape -- though I still need to go through my dresser again, and deal with the closet -- but my almost 5 year old is WAY too attached to his stuff! I can't even find the surfaces to dust them... I've been sneaking his old stuff in the outbox, but I'm afraid he's going to find it and pull it out... Help!!
I will have the weekend free to continue the kitchen demo clean which seems to have no end in sight... I flip my mattress on schedule every 6 months and turn it on the opposite 6 month schedule. I change the linens every week and the mattress pad every month. I purge my closet regularly. All my clothes, including shoes and acessories are neatly hung or stored. Wood floors are clean and all surfaces are dusted. Two of four drawers are organized, the other two are neat but things just happen to be there. Going on my to do list.
Bought my orchid last week: looks gorgeous. Did out three pieces of jewelry away. Done.
This one was my target area number 1. Donated half my wardrobe away, and got rid of an old v ugly cupboard in the process! Ta cure..
Rug is Angela Adams, I've been wanting it forever. It's on sale right now!
http://www.angelaadams.com/Betty.html?optionid=422
Just can't justify with my 2 young kids and 2 dogs. :-(
Several months ago, I did a major clothing purge. I didn't expect to have much to get rid of since I don't have a huge wardrobe, but was pleasantly surprised at how much I was ready to let go. The thing that finally did it: I tried on absolutely everything and used a full-length mirror to evaluate. There were plenty of things I loved--the fabric or the pattern--things that were comfortable. But if the item wasn't flattering, or it was comfy but too beat up to wear in public, I said goodbye. It's amazing how much stuff you can give away when you're honest with yourself! Also, my husband and I share a dresser and a closet (and there's a roughly 12" diameter vent pipe running up through my side). If our clothes don't fit in the dresser or the closet, they don't stay since there's nowhere else to store them.
I have not tried selling clothing on eBay or Craigslist but I have donated such items to an org called Dress for Success. They help low income women prepare for interviews and job environments requiring business attire. Here is their website: http://www.dressforsuccess.org/
It is a great cause and your contribution can count as a donation on your taxes.
@englishrosie I'm in south London too so snow everywhere. I hope there's more later! I have a cozy weekend at home planned and the bedroom chore will work well. I'm looking forward to wrapping up warm for a walk across the common to the glass shop later to get a mirror for my big project.
assessed the bedroom situation. i had worked on my bedroom over the holidays when i was off from work (first room that i'm painting since buying my house). didn't complete it (biggish task) when i took on the ATJC but love the changes so far. i especially love the color gray i chose. feels so much more cozy.
there's still much to do on the final touches including the closets (which i can't walk into at the moment). plan is to focus.
have a great cleaning weekend.
i love the flower assignment. taking care of my appartment by buying it flowers makes mewant to really work on it.
I did part of the cleaning today, but have a few things left for tomorrow.
OK, after last weekend's totally overwhelming assignment (did anyone really get their entire kitchen deep cleaned and organized in one weekend? If so, do you also have a kids and a job? What's your secret???), this one wasn't so bad.
Still got some laundry to do, but the bedroom is clean. I did not sort my closet yet, but it's in fairly good shape. Instead I chose to purge and organize the kids' closets yesterday - they've both apparently grown overnight, so that was way more urgent. Not only do they now contain only clothing that fits, I also know what they're going to need for the summer and for the next winter, so I already got the few winter things we needed on sale in the next size up. Feels good to be prepared...
Flowers were a challenge with the cold and snow here, but I did manage to pick up some lovely tulips and they brighten my dining room table.
Also managed to work on my project for the month and made a trip to Ikea today. Landing strip only needed some reorganizing and cleaning, but all books I managed to purge were my cookbooks, and I never managed the media fast. Oh and the kitchen... Did get the fridge done, but all cabinets? That takes weeks, as there is no way to take an entire weekend off for that.
But I do find that even if I don't manage to do every task, the Cure does change my mindset and I take small steps every day, declutter or clean something here and there, simply because I become so much more sensitive to these things.
Tackled the large walk-in closet in the bedroom today. This closet also is home to craft supplies, camping gear, holiday stuff, suitcases, linens, aquarium supplies, and the list goes on. Purged quite a bit and got the summer clothes put away. Swept under everything and we are looking good. Tomorrow the desk and the rest of the bedroom while I do the laundry. I can totally neglect this room so it is good to give it a little attention this weekend. Plan to get an orchid or jade tomorrow when I am done.
Swept and vacuumed under the bed and cleaned all the stuff stored under it. What a dust bowl!! 2 weeks of washing put away, earrings tidied and my handbags and scarves are all back in order! Fortunately I went through all my clothes a few months ago. Not a bad effort since I was out for most of the weekend. I think I might need some hayfever tablets now :)

just bought some beautiful fuschia hyacinths at trade joes for my bedroom. pretty.
off to a bit more in the bedroom.
I'm loving these chores because altho I keep my house tidy and mostly clutter-free (and I budget for a weekly housekeeper to do the basic upkeep), there are still major cleaning chores that I need to tackle- like the baseboards, vacuuming the closet, etc- the deep stuff that doesn't get done on a weekly basis. All my pillows, duvet, blankets, etc are freshly laundered thanks to one of my cats that decided not to use the litter box the other day! kitties!
One of the advantages of trying to live frugally so we can afford an at-home parent... Can't buy too many clothes, so not very many to go through! However, our big project this month is building a storage space in our attic, and so we have boxes and bins everywhere in the bedroom as we try to decide what goes in the attic, the Outbox, or back in the closet. A deep clean is not going to happen...just cleaning around stuff this weekend.
I realized how dusty I had allowed my bedroom to get. I have a ton of dark wood molding, so the dust wasn't that noticeable until I got up close and personal. Ew! I must have breathing in gross dust all the time! Unfortunately, I realized that my vacuum bag was full and didn't have any extras, so I had to order a bunch and rush them. They should arrive tomorrow or Tuesday, so I'll have to wait to do the deep vacuum until then. In the meantime, getting rid of the clutter was much needed. It got me thinking about how I want to restyle the room (including curtains, this is a sore spot for me, since I've been using sheets to cover my windows since I moved in....I can't even talk about it, I'm so embarassed). I also was thinking about getting some new bedding. I really need some new sheets and my duvet and comforter are looking a little worn out. The other HUGE task this weekend was FINALLY getting rid of a ton of old clothing. I've been meaning to do this forever. Now I just need to sort through the two big boxes, decide what needs to be cleaned, what should be tossed, and what should be donated. I already am feeling a little lighter.
Last week I forgot to buy flowers, so this week I bought double to have in both my bedroom and my living room. They make me so happy! Feeling really good!
I've had even more snow today!
I spent at least 5 hours cleaning the bedroom yesterday. I don't think it's ever been this clean. Feels good though I managed to clear a lot of clutter that was bothering me.
However as I have ventured out in the snow my spare room is a disaster zone as my outbox had now taken over the whole room. I'll just close the door for now.
I hope everyone else made some progress this weekend.
Just finished adding hooks to the back of our bedroom door for those clothes that have been worn once but are not ready for the laundry. This means no more unsightly draped jeans and sweaters on our dresser and towel rack!
Walked by our local flower shop and finally remembered to buy flowers! I picked all the junk up that was on the bedroom floor, and piled it on the bed. My husband vacuumed and the we cleared the bed and he changed the sheets and rotated the mattress. Now I need to go throught the piles of stuff and declutter. It is a relief to have all that dust vacuumed up!
went to the market this afternoon & bought pink roses & some daisies. then came home, stripped the bed, into the washer the sheets & duvet cover went (much to the dismay of my dog who was snoozing soundly on top of said bed), and clean flannel sheets went on to the bed, along with a fresh duvet cover. philly is expecting temps in the 20's all week, so it was a good time to flannel up the bed.
My bedroom was my January project, but I wasn't going to wash the bedding until today, by my cat helped me by peeing on the bed Saturday afternoon while I was out. I took her to the vet Tues and Fri. Her problem seems to have passed. Keep your fingers crossed, she's acting like her normal 16 year old self.
I've lived in my house for 1 1/2 years and I've finally unpacked the last of the boxes in my bedroom thanks to the Cure (it was my main project as well). I've got several bags of items to take to goodwill now and I also cleared out a bunch of trash as well stuff for recycling. Just a few minor cleaning tasks and I'll have this assignment wrapped up. It's almost sad how happy finishing this makes me!
My bedroom is very empty. I only have a bed and 2 floating lack shelves as bedside tables (so no drawers). I also already tackled my closet as my project of the month so I decided to tackle my laptop desktop as my project this weekend. I know it's not a physical space but I spend so much time using my laptop! I really have not organized it at all since I first bought the laptop so it was a huge mess (160 files on my desktop alone!!). It's all cleaned up now :) Very happy with the results! http://living-with-lemons.blogspot.ca/2013/01/spring-cleaning-desktop.html
This sounds really great. Unfortunately I didn't find out about the cure until last week. So I will try this cure in February instead. Besides I think the cure plan can be a great schedule for thorough spring cleaning once the weather warms up a bit!
I dit it !!
I painted my bedroom !!
I didn't have time to put everything back in its place, but it's still a huge improvement.
I blogged about it:

I still have to decorate, but I feel so good !
Hum...
I'm no good at html...
Well...that was perfect timing. Our new (gorgeous) bedroom furniture is arriving in an hour. So the main bedroom had to be completely emptied. Most of the old furniture went to the spare bedroom and that furniture has been moved to goodwill. The spare bedroom looks amazing...including pictures hung. Completely cleaned. The master bed will be done by the end of the day. Looking forward to having it all set up by noon.
@hennymats Your comment cheered me up. Yes, single parent, kids who love to build forts and do spontaneous craft projects (i.e. always some new mess to clean up, in addition to the old messes), an intense job...I haven't been able to keep up with this schedule. Instead I've decided that I will take the PDF and make each daily task a weekly task for me and I'll just keep chipping away at things as I can. But the daily inspiration has been really helpful!
My bedroom was THE project for the month. So far, we got the closet, my dresser and husband's beside table cleaned out. Then we both got sick :-(. But this week, my husband promises to clean out his dresser and then - da DAH - we made the big decision to get rid of both of our dressers and install Pax Wardrobes on either side of our bed instead! We have a tiny bedroom (gave the kids the big one, since they play in there), and I think this will free up space. Right now, both dressers are on "my" wall and I have to squeeze by them to get to bed. We don't plan on staying in this rental for much longer, but it's been 3 years already and still no house that we can afford (L.A.!), so might as well make this one nice.
And re: all the people writing about presents, whenever I've decluttered, two-thirds of the stuff I give away is presents. I finally started doing what an earlier poster said - the second I get something I don't like, I write a gracious thank you note for it, and then give it away IMMEDIATELY so it doesn't make a home in my house. Luckily, most of our relatives live out of state, and if they come to visit and inquire, I can always say "It broke during our last earthquake :-(."
And, so I don't do the same to them, I only give food or floral gifts from now on!
This was fairly easy for me as my bedroom consists of 2 dressers, a full length mirror and a bed haha. I vacuumed pretty hardcore (much to the chagrin of my silly kitty) dusted thoroughly, tidied up my jewelry/knickknacks, and changed the bedding.
We have a closet/bath attached to our bedroom and I used the time to clean that bathroom we rarely use (easy!) and organize the closet. I have such a hard time with my shoes. I have the nice ones in their boxes but my cheapy ones sit in a laundry basket on the floor that I can hardly see.
I threw some old flare jeans and a too-snug sweater in the outbox. Thinking I could have found more. Oh well...
A good assignment- it feels so much better to sleep in a really clean room and to have that sanctuary at the end of the day. It was hard to get done and I posted a day late, but it's been a heckuva couple weeks!

Well, I had guests over this weekend so I'm doing my weekend chores a day late. I did most everything except the closet because that alone would take a day. My plan is to tackle a drawer or part of the closet each day this week instead since that should only take a few minutes.
