A long holiday weekend stretches ahead - fellow Chicagoans, how about making a quick escape from the city? One of the easiest destinations to visit, close by but really so very different from our urban setting, is the Michigan Coast. It's an area that the Apartment Therapy Chicago writers have explored a bit and continue to visit whenever we can. Jump below for a roundup of some of our past posts to inspire a possible weekend jaunt:

Thanks for reminding me of Michael's beautiful, restful-to-the-eye house.
Any idea where the Eiffel Tower print came from??
HOMESICK
Thanks for the Michigan shout-out!
There are lots of great towns along the Lake Michigan coast (and with the highest unemployment in the country, we can use the tourism dollars!). South Haven, Saugatuck, Holland, Grand Haven, Muskegon and the list goes on and on!
Check out www.beachtowns.org for more info - and no, I don't work for the govt, I'm just fond of my beautiful state.
gretagrace: i found it here, sure theyll have it on the US site too :)
I like it too, but i hate people who wear 'i love paris' t shirts in paris, so this in my appartment would say kind of the same thing lol

I love Michael's house. I grew up on Michigan's coast, and have really fond memories of going to the lake house.
Michael's house is so clean and crisp, but still beachy. It's not at all like the loved, careworn cottages of my memories. Still, I like it a lot.
Another place to consider is Saugatuck, Michigan. It's absolutely beautiful, and has a fun, kitschy aesthetic. When I was a kid, it was always filled with visiting Chicagoans in the summer.
Wow - Thank you rheajayde!
When I was in gradeschool, Dad was stationed at the old Kincheloe AFB outside Sault Ste Marie, Michigan...
... I have fond memories of summer daytrips to Petoskey, Traverse City, Charlevoix, Harbor Springs, Cheboygan, Mackinac City and Mackinac Island.
Gretagrace: You're welcome :)
Thanks for the post and great resources!
Michigan is one of the most underestimated states in the union as far as beautiful scenery goes.
It's stunning, and it's why my husband and I will be spending our vacation there this year... even though we live in one of the most popular tourism states—Florida.
: )
I second DanielleM's comment on wonderful towns such as Holland, Saugatuck, South Haven and Grand Haven but then again I grew up along that stretch of lakeshore, so I'm very biased :) Another amazing place to visit further "up north" in Michigan is Leelanau County, especially Leland. I wish I could spend this summer there. *sigh*
Another native hooray for Michigan! After spending most of my teenage years dreaming of escape and imagining moving somewhere more glamorous, as an adult I've realized how grateful I am to live in such a beautiful state! I truly love my city now - full of history and near enough to these coastal towns to visit very frequently but far enough inland that I'm not overwhelmed with the summer tourism (no offense - we love you guys, and your money). We spend just about every other weekend during the warmer months camping, and the trips to and from the forest, watching the verdant summer landscape roll by, may be my favorite part of those excursions. This is a magical place - don't miss an opportunity to come visit.
If you do go to MI, stop at Cafe Soe on Red Arrow Highway - it's the bomb!
The husband and I hope to travel over and up into Michigan (from Chicago of course) to go cherry picking, or other foraging for fruit. It really is such a beautiful place, especially to get out of the city.
Many of these are in my neck of the woods! I love going to estate sales and moving sales just so I can look inside the homes. Many of them actually do look like the homes pictured.
Now I'm homesick, too. At least I get to visit in a few weeks!
Don't forget the UP. It can be a bit more rustic and less to do, but the Superior coast is amazing in it's own right.
one more homesick commenter...luckily i get to go back in a week.
michigan really is not rightfully acknowledged for how astoundingly beautiful it is very often
Based on that first pic, I;m homesick to, and I'm not even FROM Michigan.
I loved that interior from the Small Cool Contest! So "essence of Summer"!
Can't wait to visit in August! Any recommendations for attractions between Detroit and Traverse City?
Yay! Finally a post in my hometown! I am so grateful to live where I do - Traverse City.
Something AP didn't mention re: summer trips to the North... The Traverse City Film Fest is coming up in just a few weeks! Michael Moore makes sure to bring a solid dose of culture, visual and intellectual stimulation to the rugged North.
Also, the UP is amazing, if you're interested in going back in time 30 years. Really, I bought a pair of sunglasses from the late 70s that had been sitting in a five and dime for so long they were coated in dust. So many gems up there!
