We're not sure what the weather is like for all you readers, but here in Chicago we are officially in Fall mode – the temperature went from 80 to 60 in a matter of a weekend. It's about this time that we start thinking about how to winter-ready our homes. Here, at our apartment, my boyfriend and I decided to install storm doors. Adding a storm door will not only add additional insulation, but also a view and ventilation when the screen is in place.
Aside from a glass block window, we only have windows along one side of our apartment, which faces another house. So, the decision to add a storm door was easy – we'll have more light, insulation, and cross-ventilation.
Installing the storm door was fairly painless and quick – we installed one on both of our exterior doors, and each took about 4 hours. Storm doors are relatively inexpensive, and can be installed by you. Adding a storm door can be a good investment if your existing door is old but still in good condition.
There are several options of styles and materials, such as wood, aluminum, or fiberglass, any of which will do fine depending on your budget. We decided to go will the 'full view' from Emco. The full pane of glass will bring the outdoors inside our home and it looks nice!
What have you done to winter-ready your home?
