I don't wear a lot of make-up, but even the half dozen products I put on daily don't fit in my no-storage-at-all bathroom. Thanks to Pinterest, I may have found a solution.
What I lack in storage and counter space, I make up (no pun intended!) for in wall space. This solution not only frees up valuable surfaces (limited, in my case, to the slippery one inch border around my sink and the soap dish) but adds some visual interest to the bare walls. Creating this magnetic makeup board is as easy as fitting a piece of metal in a frame and covering it with fabric or sturdy wallpaper to blend with your decor, gluing small magnets onto the back of your stuff and onto a small cup to hold tools, and arranging everything artfully. In my simple spare bathroom, I'm planning to opt for Ikea's Ribba frame and inexpensive linen fabric. You can also use a metal cookie sheet or vintage metal serving tray.
This isn't a girls-only project — men might adopt the same idea to keep their shaving supplies off the counter.

Nomade Express Slee...
Cute idea. Though when I read that someone who 'doesn't wear a lot of makeup' uses a half-dozen make-up products daily I'm glad I went down the no-makeup path years ago :)
the only problem I see with that is if you ever pack makeup in your bag after you added the magnets. magnets ruin credit and debit cards!
Um wearing a half-dozen make-up products seems like a lot to me. Most of the time the only thing I wear is sunscreen and lip balm.
I think what's nice about this is that I could actually use it for other storage things, such as my hair ties and bobby pins, cotton balls and qtips, etc. Something like this http://bit.ly/PKxhXg, but on a smaller scale.
I made of these awhile ago! I have been packing make-up with magnets in my bag every day ever since (probably a year) and have had no problems. My only problem was when I covered up the color name of my favorite Mac eyeshadow with a magnet...took me awhile to determine exactly which shade of off-peach it was!
I am almost certain the Myth Busters busted the myth about magnets versus credit cards.
Very cute project!
Could also be cute mounted lower and used for kids to "put away" their toothbrushes, toothpastem, combs, etc.
Toothpaste.
For me, this would be a mess in the making as things toppled off the magnets. Plus, I use a cover-up in a heavy glass bottle, wouldn't stick. I use pressed powder and blush in fairly heavy compacts -- might or might not stick. I use mascara as a wand -- don't know if a magnet would make a good enough connection. Typically that's all I use, but they are all problems for magnets. Thankfully, I have a drawer in my vanity so i also have my own solution! ;^)
I'd think a basket attached to the wall (on a little shelf or a basket with a handle on a hook) would be another option.
thinking that would work in my home office as well.
thanks for the tip!
I have done this for about a year -- DON'T DISCOUNT THIS IF YOU THINK THINGS WILL FALL!
I use the ikea SPONTAN magnet board. Super cheap and easy.
I hang everything but my toothpaste and hairbrush. If you use super strong magnets and hot glue, even though the contact between the magnet and a round tube, like mascara, may be small, the glue is strong enough to keep it there. Similar theory for my toothbrush. Simple "stick on" magnets have been sufficient for eyeshadow compacts and similar items.
For "jars" -- if it's pressed, hang it. If it's loose, I have a little basket that I hung on the wall below my board for these. I don't have a ton of them so it works well. It's the same place I store my brush and toothpaste. (Ikea has a little hanging bar with many types of baskets/holders you can hook on it. I just don't recall the name)
I've also found that "loose" magnets, not attached to anything, are great for many items. Nail clippers, tweezers, loose bobby pins... There are many things that are magnetic already and will stick to a magnet that is stuck to the board.
My issue with this is that make-up tends to get messy. Lids break off, powder gets loose etc. I'm happier with it all in a drawer.
Haha, yeah, "I don't wear a lot of make-up, but even the half dozen products I put on daily" ...what? if applying 6 different things to your face every day is considered not a lot, I feel glad to have lost touch with the world of "beauty." That just seems absurd to me.
Anyway, this is a cute idea but I feel like it is cleaner and easier to just keep what you use in a little makeup bag, and the rest under the sink. And if you have more than will fit in a makeup bag/under the sink, then that is slightly horrifying to me and I guess I don't have any real suggestions other than "you don't need all of that."
I just don't know why anyone would want to display makeup so prominently. It's not like half-used eyeshadow is cool to look at.
To some of the other commenters: If you don't like to wear makeup, that's just fine and dandy, but don't get judgey wudgey about people who do. Six products may be overkill to you, but it may be just right to someone else. When I had cystic acne, I felt much better when wearing concealer, foundation, and powder. You could see me instead of the zits. If I wanted to put on some eye makeup and lip gloss, too -- boom, I'm up to 6 products easily.
Thank goodness I don't have the skin problems anymore, but now I treat makeup like some people might treat shoes or jewelry -- it's a fun accessory to experiment with. Daily, I only have time to put on mascara and eyeliner, but when I have time to really play, I own a ton of products that help me do cool effects like doe eyes. Basically, I'm just saying don't assume that people who own a lot of makeup all set their makeup guns to whore.
Yeah, it's kinda irritating that if make-up is ever mentioned online, there's always a chorus of women who feel compelled to jump in and point out how ridiculous it is and (by implication) how much less shallow they are because they don't wear it.
Whatev. I wear make-up and the number of products I use in the morning would blow your mind. It's a hobby I enjoy and not some desperate thing I do the please the patriarchy.
Re: magnetic boards. I have the Ikea metal board that coordinates with magnetic cups (I believe intended for office supplies) and use it to store my make-up brushes, pencils, and other tools. It's nice have it all off the counter top yet readily accessible.
Six items, at a guess. Concealer, Foundation, Lipstick, Eyeliner, Mascara, Blush. Pretty basic and hasn't really changed in decades. Might drop concealer and add eyeshadow. Not an over the top amount of makeup, and certainly not one to be shocked over, unless you're just trying to come across as superior and smug. Probably the same people who comment they don't have a TV when someone on here asks where is the best place to put their TV in and awkward rooom.
My wife does makeup professionally, and the amount of makeup she has necessitates a lot of storage, so this interests me as a concept.
This is a cute idea. It's also a useful trick for office supplies (little paper clips, push pins, etc) & cooking spices.
I have a mini makeup bag I keep my make up in. It's portable, which is infinitely useful to me. The frame magnets would be handy for small pots of eyeshadows. :)
interesting. I may try something like this for the medicine cabinet i'm installing.
I have a semi-snarky pet peeve with this image:She really needs to clean her brushes! I'm kind of grossed out.
I used to use a giant magnet on my belt for work (for pins) and found on a cross country trip to L.A. that my credit and debit cards were useless....but that was years ago.
@ T_VIOLET & AKAY: Your sentiments echoed my thoughts perfectly. The fact that I enjoy collecting and wearing makeup doesn't make me a victim of the patriarchy or not a feminist. To each her own, right?
I do think this is an interesting idea, but I have the opposite problem as the poster--I have almost no wall space in my bathroom, just wide countertops that quickly become cluttered with products. I'd also be worried about packing makeup products with magnets attached, seems potentially messy somehow.
I like this idea. I might have to give this a try and let you know how it turned out.
Thanks for posting!
This could be a good idea for some items, but you would get crazy amounts of fallout from powders -- especially with the cheap drugstore brands visible in the image. (I wear mostly drugstore makeup, and it can certainly look good on, but in my experience, loose powder in the palette is always an issue with lower-end brands.) I would expect to lose a surprising amount of product and spend some time with a wet wipe every day.
This is a great idea. I have a vanity in my bedroom, but my 1 year-old daughter reaches up and grabs EVERYTHING from it--even if it is in a tray or box. I am going to make one of these boards out of necessity. I love make-up and I think when displayed the look could be quite artistic.
