Don't blink or you'll miss them! If you happen upon a tiny, adorable door then rejoice because you've found your very own fairy door. Just what are these charming little gems? We investigate.

The legend goes that fairy doors are gateways to the world of fairies. They're magical portals that can appear and disappear at random. Only those who believe will be able to find them.

We know that some fantasy-loving humans have also been installing a few doors of their own. They began popping up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, then there were reports of fairy doors in San Francisco and now they're all over NYC.

Children sometimes even leave little gifts for the fairies right on their doorstep like this red fairy door, an exact copy of the adjacent entrance of Lexi's Toy Box in Ann Arbor, Michican.

Some of the doors are even pretty literate in technology. Performance artist Cynthia von Buhler has been publicizing her Speakeasy Dollhouse project with tiny doors equipped with scannable CR codes (like the one above) all over New York. But, she tells Untapped Cities, most of the doors are actually put up by fans who are inspired by her work. She says, “About 150 doors have been put up. Some have doormats with secret keys underneath. A few actually open.”

Secret keys? Opening doors? Consider us charmed.

Have you ever seen a fairy door?
