So they didn't build their own house. Were we really surprised? No. Although we thought that when Clive showed up he was bringing an army of help like on Extreme Home Makeover. Instead he brought a boat to shuttle them to a fully-built Nashville lake house where the 9 contestants would be designing 5 rooms with $15,000 in 31 hours. Still quite a challenge...
We reveal the loser after the break
The rooms to be designed included a living room with adjoining sun room, a dining room and two bedrooms (each to house 4 beds). We found it interesting to watch as they put themselves into teams of 4 (living room/sun room), 3 (two bedrooms) and 2 (dining room) without having a real discussion about concept or common goals for the designs given that they all have to live there in the end. Maybe if they had they wouldn't have ended up with a brown sun room and tie-died bedding.
Highlight of the show: that AMAZING 9', single slab wood table that Stephanie and Jennifer somehow haggled down to $600. It took all 9 designers to wedge it into the house but it was beautiful...until they painted it! Did anyone else's heart stop when you saw that primer poured onto that beautiful wood? They painted an amazing wood table high gloss white and then painted the glossy white mantle brown. Did anyone make sense of this?
To us, there were clear front-runners and weak links from the get-go. Scottie's burnt orange paint chip and tie-died beds along with Tracee's chocolate brown sunroom had us terrified but Matt's 4-in-1 bed concept had us giddy. The living room turned out surprisingly well despite the bickering between Tracee and Michael although we agree with the judges that one of the pieces of furniture could have used a geometric pattern. There was also a lot of "twig" art in the house.
For a group trying to win a spot to host their own TV show there was a lot of fighting, finger-pointing and crying in front of the judges - and this is only the first challenge! In the end it was Scottie's show that was cancelled, not due to drama but because of an undercooked design. Maybe he shouldn't have flown solo on the first challenge. Reactions?
