Ideas for Arranging Awkward Dining Area?

Good Questions

Q: We just moved to a pre-war apartment in Washington Heights. Our dining area is driving me mad because our dining table (33 1/2" by 50 1/2") and chairs just don't feel right in this space. If a guest sits in the chair near the step, we ask him/her to sit someplace else because of the danger of falling into the living room. The light fixture came with the apartment and is always off-center.

The glass book shelves are built into the wall. Wall art is moveable. The space is 43" on the short wall; 38" on the angled bookshelf wall; 58" on the long wall by the step. The color in the dining room is Benjamin Moore Cashmere Gray, and the living room is Benjamin Moore Gray Lake. I am looking forward to your design help and suggestions. Our budget is between $400-600.
