What Can I Do with $2000 to Update This Kitchen?

Good Questions

Q: Hello, Apartment Therapy readers! I need some serious help. My boyfriend and I will be moving into this gorgeous Capitol Hill flat in August. Everything about this old beauty is perfect, except the kitchen. The owners were nice enough to allot $2000 to have a contractor do some work on the kitchen (this budget is just for renovations — contractor fees are being paid by the owners).

We have a long list of things we would like, but with only $2000 and a three week deadline, we are stuck trying to prioritize. (Note: My boyfriend is a chef and has put up with a tiny, dysfunctional kitchen for many years.) I would love for him to have a bigger/nicer stove/oven, but I would also love to see a different countertop.

I am also planning on sanding and painting the cabinets and adding new hardware, which I can do with my own $$ and labor. Any other suggestions on where to focus??

PS - Sorry for the bad pictures — we haven't been able to get back in to take better ones since we viewed the place a week ago. Try to visualize!

Thanks!!
