Q: I let my boyfriend pick the color of this couch (larger photo below) and I absolutely detest it! I wanted to go for a more neutral color or a green to match the wall a bit better. The color of the couch has kept me from buying pillows, an area rug or lamps to go with it...any suggestions?

My boyfriend likes midcentury lines and colors that are influenced by 60's and 70's as evident in the selection of color for the sofa. I would love to send it back and have it reupholstered, but this couch was custom made and is too expensive for me to send it back to get reupholstered!!!
PLEASE HELP!!! What color carpet and pillows should I buy???

White Enamel Flatwa...
Sage green and heathered cranberry would compliment this color beautifully. Check out the ad below this, the one with the clawfoot tub filled with big fat pillows. The colors are luscious and would work well. You might end up loving this, please let us know.
I love the couch. The photos are a bit blurry, I'm not sure if the color is camel or mustard. Either way, I like it. It definitely looks like a neutral to me. I would take a hint from the wall color behind the sofa. Keep it simple, two solid cotton 18" squares for the spring and summer, two solid velvet 18' squares for the winter. Don't make yourself crazy over this. I would also check out FLOR tiles for your rug. Pick something that would compliment the sofa. I have the "House Pet" FLOR tiles and they are the bomb. I kid you not they do not show dirt, lint, or my Golden Retriever's pet hair. They have some texture and it's a cool look. Let us know what the exact color of the couch. How would you describe it. Good luck.
@veslabeachgirl, Ditto.
Are you keeping the lamp? If so, orange! I like how it's bright against the wall, but compliments the neutrality of the sofa. Plus I happen to love orange :)
Your couch looks like a perfect 50's color to me. Pillow colors could pick up the wall color very nicely. A crisp white with that aqua tone would be great also. A fun print with both of those colors would look great.
I love it! I think you'll find a lot of options with these two colors, so you'll just have to figure out which "direction" you want to take. For now, I'd look for a rug that brings in some cool tones or neutrals to help break up the couch/floor situation. They're both warm colors and similar tones, so I think its making the couch have an even bigger impact than it would otherwise. And I'd definitely consider ditching (or repurposing) the lamp - its large, too orange, and the shape doesn't really mesh well with the couch.
For colors, check out different stores for ideas:
1. you could keep blue and orange as your accent colors and keep everything else neutral (Pottery Barn would have lots of traditional florals and stripes to go with this approach)
2. go "bollywood" inspired and bring in lots of bright jewel tones (World Market is a great source for inspiration)
3. Bring in lots of natural materials and tones in sleek lines (Check out Crate and Barrel)
4. Go modern with metallics, individual pieces in bright colors or whites, and low-slung or minimalist pieces (Check out CB2; maybe a white flotaki rug?)
Company C ad, is the one I was referring to. On my screen the color of the couch looks faded orange, was going on that. Metallics are a great idea, too, @mcintyree.
I love this combination (dark yellow and petrol) as it looks on my screen. I'd also get rid of the lamp. What I'd do further:
1. Go for gold: Use white pillows (maybe with blue pattern), woodsy colors and some gold (eg lamps, picture frames etc) things as accent color
OR
2. Modern 70's: I'd go with white lamps, round forms and dark brown as accent color. But not these wild patterns, keep it simple. With those strong colors I wouldn't add so much patterns.
Cream -- almost white -- with some texture would really make both the sofa and the wall pop.
We have these colors - Valspar's "Linden" on the walls and sofa/chair with gold, rust, cinnamon, olive. Art work with punches of orange, apple green, golden yellow. Suzani curtains with a field of lineny beige and linden blue, and the goldeny yellow, rust, etc. See if you can combine a few of these colors, for punch and lightness. Get some pattern and texture in there. Have fun! I love your sofa - wish it was mine. :-)
I love the slatey-teal blue and orangey-brown combo. I like the idea of adding neutrals and metallics. I also think an oriental rug would look good.
I think the jewel tones thing you've already got going on with the wall and sofa looks great! If that's not your style, basically anything looks good with black and white -- black and white bold patterned accessories might look nice.
@abcornwell, Ooh, those colors sound nice, too.
The existing colors are in the Autumn palette of Color Me Beautiful. You could check this book out from the library to see other Autumn colors that may go well with them and also please you.
I would keep the couch and add a Persian rug with the blue and tan colors. Get cream colored pillows and a cream colored throw for couch (these will brighten up the sofa color). Lastly, put some artwork on that wall that matches the rug. It'll all look great!

You have a very definite color pallete already - Teal, Mustard, Orange, White and Beige. The only thing I'd add to this is a metallic - preferably gold and brass tones - as well as some wood elements, preferably in the mid-tone/oak range.
Stick with those colors & elements and you'll end up with a nice cohesive space. Try to add more colors and you'll end up with one heck of a mess.
@bepsi, Sounds great--what pattern(s) would bring the existing colors together well?
Definitely a print. I think this floral crate and barrel would work well. It has teal, cream, dark brown, sage green, beige & maroon.

It's a bit difficult to determine the color of the wall. It looks blue, but you mention wanting a sofa color in green "to match the wall". I would go with a rug that is very creamy and textural, maybe even a shag. A great accent color with gold/camel/tobacco is pink. It is often overlooked but can add a great deal of interest to darker neutrals. And it will work well regardless of whether or not the wall is green or blue. The lamp must go. A Rhea lamp (Crate and Barrel) would be interesting since the base is an avocado green. In wood tones, choose darker walnut shades (NOT espresso, it lacks depth). And most important, choose some artwork for the wall behind the sofa. Incorporate the colors you decided to use as accents, but stay with a dreamier, softer look. Not too graphic. The color of the sofa is actually extremely versatile. I hope you come to love it!
A simple, curvy, geometric pattern in some of the existing colors could complement the style. Pillows with a geometric side and a solid side in one of the geometric side's colors, to mix and match, might be nice with a floral area rug. The lamps could have simple white shades.
not very mid-mod, but
something with more organic curves for the rug with muted tones. i'm thinking a paler angela adams.
I'd get some thing with a soft pattern that incorporates the color of the wall, an easy answer is the line of tapestry pillows from Pottery Barn.
A linear geometric pattern on the pillows would be a nice contrast to the the curvy pattern of the floral area rug suggested by Kit.
The wall and sofa are reading as big, solid neutrals that just need some pattern to spice things up. I think once you get some items with visual details into the room, you'll come to at least not hate the sofa. Here's some ideas:
Villagio rug from Crate and Barrel
Rodeo Drive Patchwork Wool Rug from Overstock
Spirale pillow from Chiasso
Broadcast pillow from CB2
Call me crazy, but something shaggy and rectangular like this in white/cream might look great on that sofa:

wow!Thank you for all for taking the time to make all of these suggestions. To answer questions about the true colour of the wall and sofa...the wall is actually a greener teal and dark and the sofa is brighter than the picture. A rich pumpkin colour. Also, behind it I will be putting a huge curvy vintage 1920's mirror. I've mentioned getting rid of the lamp on the right, but my boyfriend seems to be married to it. Also, I have a vintage surveyor's tripod lamp I was thinking of using on one side of the couch. But it has no lampshade...any suggestions? Also, I have four cats and a dog, so I can't spend too much on a fancy carpet...so far, the flor carpet idea is doable since the individual tiles can be replaced if needed. Progress is very slow, but when it is done, I will def send in the results! Thanks!
I have to say that I love the colour of the couch, but not so much with the colour of the wall... I think it makes too much contrast with the couch and draws attention to its brightness. I would probably paint the walls out in a paler blue-turquoise, so a very similar colour but in a lighter shade. Then go with orange and turquoise and white hits in your pillows/art/carpet etc. I love the tripod lamps and I think that would look great with the couch -- maybe with a white lampshade for contrast.
I say get some white pillows, because all colors look different next to white, maybe one or two with a pattern. The stripes on the lamp aren't echoed anywhere in the room.
For the rug, I would go with a vivid red (that is if that lamp and pillow are orange). I can't really tell looking at the picture.
I love that couch, it looks to be a pretty neutral color and it has a simple shape so you can take more chances with any other decor. I like the idea of going with a very large rug. One sorta like with an oriental type pattern, but not really asian looking, ya know what i mean. Just so it has plenty of colors to work with, perhaps with a dominant green tone, with maybe some blue and warmer tones like reds and oranges thrown in too,and with a hint of your couch color in it also. That way you have a large piece to center everything in your room and plenty of ways you can draw from the colors in the rug to play with accessories and pillow options.
I think I agree with Ironsides. A shaggy white/cream carpet would look awesome! I think Ikea might sell one that's faux fur. It looks really comfy but I'm not sure how well it would clean.
This color palette really reminds me of orla kiely--the multistem print should provide some complementary color ideas
