There have been a new crop of alarm clocks as of late that take a creative approach to motivating you to get out of bed. While there has long existed a runaway clock you literally have to chase down in order to turn off, the new concepts are a little more extreme.
One forces you to do math equations of increasing difficulty in order to turn it off/hit snooze (my worst nightmare) and the other literally shreds your money if you don’t get out of bed and turn it off.
What extremes are you willing to go to in order to get up in the AM?

Z2 iPod Dock and Wi...
Five alarms. Almost didn't work today!
The alarm next to the bed goes off first. Fifteen minutes later the alarm on the dresser - the one that I have to get out of bed to reach - goes off. It works pretty well!
man, if you can't get out of bed by 8:15am (clock in picture) then let me introduce you to my children.
I don't need extremes, just the thought of my boss lecturing me on being late is enough to get me out of bed.
Get a dog that will gladly poop or pee (sometimes both!) somewhere in the apartment if he's not walked by 6:30am.
My roommate used to have this alarm clock that sounded like the bell on a fire house. It was ear piercingly loud but did the trick. We jumped out of the bed every morning.
Unfortunately the one with the money doesn't really apply... as long as you have at least 51% of the bill, you can get it replaced!
Haha. These comments are funny. I like the boss lecture and the dog.
I have a dog. He whines and and whines until I take him out. But even that sometimes doesn't get me because he really isn't my dog he's my ROOMMATES DOG, mine waits patiently until i get up. I even get up before her sometimes and she snoozes away.
My boss I did have a boss that I would not want to be late for but I managed to be late the first 4 days of my new schedule which was be there at 6:45 lol then it changed to be there at 6:30 oh boy. I have to set three alarms.
One won't do it. Chances are I won't hear it. Or in my sleeping state hit off.
A cash shredding alarm clock?? Brilliant!!
None. I tend to wake up a half hour before I need to be up, no matter the time zone or the amount of sleep I did or didn't get the night before. I don't think I've set an alarm clock in 15 or 20 years.
When I used to live in a studio, my cat was my alarm. Every morning at 7, he'd be meowing for his life so that I would get up and feed him. Since we moved to an one-bedroom, I just use my phone. Snooze is my bestfriend sometimes..
If you can't wake up for anything short of money being shredded, there's probably a bigger problem you need to address ...
But then, I'm one of those Morning People, so maybe I just don't get it?
My cat hitting me in the face - better than any alarm clock.
There are some mornings where I would let it shread that hundred dollars. I am definitely not a morning person.
I don't use an alarm clock. Just the thought of that first cup of freshly ground coffee is enough to get me out of bed.
a full bladder by 7am. There is just no way of enjoying sleep in that state.
mine is my kids who wake up obnoxiously early every morning. Failing that, my boyfriend texts me on his way to work at 6:30ish am each morning to make sure I'm up. THANKS hun (sarrrcasm!)
While working for some museums and going to university an alarm clock is enough. I'd be tried and curse the world for its cruelty but I would get out of bed.
Now that I am a freelancer? Basically nothing will wake me up until my body got enough sleep. Which is 8-10 hours no matter the time I go to bed.
@hethyr--too funny.
One of my dogs (we have two, plus a cat), is so amazingly punctual you could set a clock to him. All it takes is about three days of consistent awakening at the same time and on the fourth day, Z will be standing by the side of the bed chuffing and barking to let me know he's awake and I best be, too. Z is a much more charming alarm clock than anything available on the market!
I'm with Xtina.
I'm with kariwk, no alarm clock is best. I found having an alarm, just encouraged me to delay getting up. I either wake up on time, at the same time the same day -- or when I need to wake earlier, the fear that I will oversleep and be late is enough to get me out of bed.
Fear of being late is enough for me. Sadly I have some form of chronic exhaustion and am a natural night owl anyway, but I'm getting better. My cell phone alarm does just fine, although my cat naturally wakes me up 15 minutes before it goes off, no matter what time it's set for.
One of my cats is so insistent. If she's not fed by 6, she will start biting my nose. I thought about training her out of it, but honestly, this is the only wake up call that's ever worked for me.
My alarm clock is set to my Ipod so I just put whatever song I want to wake up to on the night before. It's sooooooo much better than a screechy siren which just makes me want to hurl my alarm clock at the nearest wall.
This is a fascinating comment thread! I am so not a morning person, and every single day is like Groundhog's Day for me: oversleep, rush around getting ready, curse, knock something over, forget at least one gadget, run out the door sweating, and pray for public transportation to arrive on time. Fun. I probably need that money shredding alarm clock.
I had thought adopting a dog would help me get up earlier, but considering I was twiddling my thumbs on Saturday morning and finally had to tap on my dog's crate at 10:30 to wake her for her morning walk, I'd say that is not likely. She likes her beauty sleep. (She also likes her privacy, sometimes pushing her pillow up against the front of her crate as a crude "Do Not Disturb" sign. I love that silly dog).
We have two dogs & they wake up no later than 6 AM including weekends - on weekends I let them outside & feed them & then we all go back to bed. However, Tues-Fri I set the alarm on my cell phone at 5:30 & put that in the bathroom so I have to get up. Of course, the dogs are always my backup in case I sleep through the alarm. I am NOT a morning person but I luckily I work a 4 day week- the 10 hour days are demanding but it's worth it to me to have an extra day to sleep in.
My mom was a nightowl too and I think I passed the gene along to my son. He was never the kind of kid who bounced out of bed at 5 AM ready for cartoons & cereal. We even had to wake him up on Christmas morning. He uses the cell phone method as well but with his cat as backup.
My head-butting alarm cat and vomiting dog were the most effective wake-up methods. Now that they're gone, I rely on the "Shake Awake" alarm clock for deaf people, which is the final in a series of alarms for this nightowl.
This time of year the "dawn chorus" (otherwise known as "damn birds") starts at about 4:30, so my struggle is staying asleep till a decent hour. But if I really, really have to get up early--say, for an early morning flight--I set my regular alarm and my iPhone as backup. In any case, worrying about oversleeping is enough to get me up on my own.
Depends on the dog. Our boxer, now 11.5 years old, gets up in the morning AFTER we do! When she was 6 months old, she'd wait for us to get up. But she's like us - a little different!
I have two alarms: my clock and my phone. I have also used the coffee pot in the bedroom before. It beeps when it's done brewing, and the smell of a fresh pot is SO nice!
Aside from that, I have a very noisy and insistent cat. He peeps once when I hit snooze the first time, then goes NUTS the second it goes off again.
bah humbug...i'll get up for a doughnut! YES, have an alarm clock that makes krispy kreme doughnuts!
It takes me some time to wake up, I'm the type that will lay back down on the couch for extra zzz's while waiting on the carpool. I set 3 alarms on my phone about 17 minutes apart, and the grand finale is my vintage talking Vox Clock on the other side of the room.
@Muesli - seriously! Recently I've been waking up 10-15 minutes before my alarm and needing to pee. Once I've gone to the bathroom it's not worth going back to bed for the extra few minutes.
I set my mental alarm clock. It's been working for me for forty years. Someone taught me the trick and it's worked ever since. Of course it all depends on getting a good nights' sleep, mind control and all that...it's all connected. The deep relaxation required has also eliminated 99% of my dreams over the years. I feel rested, refreshed and content. (It took a while though.)
My cats are pretty good alarm clocks, because I feed them first thing when my feet hit the floor. With food hanging in the balance, they don't give me much leeway.
My son in his room over the monitor "Play!" "Daddy!" "More Cars!". There's no way to shut that one off, folks.
Samson, my pug, wakes up about 15 minutes before my alarm and prances around the bed. I'm groggy until my alarm, at which point I'm just ready to get out of bed.
I set two alarms... one chimes on my phone (next to my bed) and the other the radio on my iHome alarm clock (across the room, but it has a REMOTE! An alarm clock with a remote control, brilliant.) Since I stopped drinking I've been sleeping much better and am often awake before either alarm goes off. Also, I'm now usually starving in the morning, so the promise of a cup of milky tea and a peanut butter and banana sandwich makes getting up a little more exciting.
My cats are NO help. They usually don't get up until after I.
I'm sad to say that I'm not sure any of those alarm clocks would actually work for me...I have one that gets increasingly louder the more you ignore it, but I still snooze that sucker most mornings...NOT a morning person!!
Rather than destroying money, wouldn't it be better to donate it?

Try waking up to the sound of donkeys.
Thankfully, they usually wait for a more respectable hour and I get up on or before the first beep of my alarm clock.
i hate all those people who just said they haven't used an alarm in 15, 20, 30 years.
I have to switch my ideas up before I get used to them and can disable them in my sleep before I'm consciously awake.
I have 5 alarms set on my cell phone from 6:30 to 7:30, an alarm clock which gets increasingly louder and an relentlessly cheery roommate. I still manage to get to work 10 minutes late every day.
This is one of the reasons I'm adopting a cat. (I am aware this means I will end up with one that's less of a morning person than I am.)
The thought of a Starbucks venti extra cream mocha latte gets me out of bed sometimes.
I once went on vacation for a week and accidently left my alarm clock on automatic which means my neighbor had to listen to my high pitched alarm clock going off for an hour every morning. Wow that note greeting me on the front door when I got back was somthing else.
Is it legal to mutilate money like this?
I get enough sleep.
My aversion to a morning schedule is why I switched to a night job, I love life so much more.
I set my alarm but I always wake up 30 mins or so before it goes off. When I was younger, I'd wake up about a minute before the alarm went off. It was weird.
My alarm is a 16 month old boy who wakes me by shoving his fingers deep into my nostrils and wiggling them around until he practically tickles my brain, while chortling wildly with delight. Hard not to wake up from that.
man, if you need that, you need to see a doctor & get some better sleep
