Q: I am having issues selecting a paint color for my front door (larger photo below). I'd like something that really pops! As you can see the current brown door simply blends in with the reds and browns of the tudor. I've tried a very bright red, but it has much the same issue; it's lost in the brick and brown color palette.

Z2 iPod Dock and Wi...
A purplish blue (aka "ultra blue") would be beautiful. Artsy and tasteful.
hm... its nice as it is!
Yellows have always complemented brown color palettes very nicely.
I have a lot of red and brown tones in my apartment because the walls are wrapped in brick, and the most eye catching furniture piece that I always get complements on is my canary-yellow claw-foot couch. It really stands out.
Teal blue
I immediately thought of teal blue. I guess babyfishmouth beat me to it!
I think that either a high gloss black or a high gloss light beigy creamy colour would look really nice---slightly darker than the stucco on your elevation.
mustard.
Robin's egg blue
Lisa Hunter has it right. A nice apple green would really stand out. Normally, I'd advocate for yellow, but with your style of house, bright yellow wouldn't be the best. If you went mustard yellow, that would fit in better with the house's overall aesthetic. I still stand by apple green though!
blue-a bit darker than crayola blue but no where near navy. the brick seems more on the orange side than red and blue is the contrasting color to orange. you should print out that picture and just replace the color with the paint swatches from the store that are the right size.
I agree that a bright yellow would be really striking, as a contrast in both the color and the style of the house. But, the best idea is to print out a picture and play with some color chips!
I'd go green or blue. You don't have to go too bright, either -- even the muted shades will stand out again the brick red. Of course, nothing wrong with a little electric blue, if that's what you like... :)
What about a light sage green, or an aqua with a lot of gray in it (the color of the ground cover in front of the big windows). The idea of baby blue really appeals to me too, but it might only be because in the picture, the 2nd floor windows are that color--that might not look the same in real life.
I am picturing a kelly green door.
I think there are a lot of options that would give you that kick of color, but I don't sense that you're looking for something that contrasts with the style of your house and its surroundings (traditional).
The only color I can visualize that would stand out, but not conflict, would be a deep mustard color. Pick one that veers almost into a brown palate - it will catch the eye, but not in a "hey, look at that house with the bright yellow door" sort of way.
Peacock blue
I have a dark red home as well, and have been contemplating this for months now. I've finally decided to go with a slightly muted apple green. Not too bright, but the fresh green color will really "pop" against the rich dark red I think.
Do you have a screen or storm door in front of the door? That can also reduce the impact of a colored door. I took mine off because we didn't really need it, and it makes a world of difference.
Wow, you guys are amazing! Thanks for all the suggestions.
I never would have considered anything in the yellow family...
FYI...I did use the picture from above on my phone to check colors, but agree printing it out makes more sense :)
Best, Eric
Truthfully, I keep getting distracted by the white in the house. My feeling is that you should paint that a warm taupe so that the dark brown trim is accented more softly. Then look again at door colors. You have a better chance of choosing a successful door color that will make the impact you want. A nice golden tone might work but I would like you to consider a greeny blue; as in a soft teal. As some suggested, print out a color picture and try the paint chips on the area(s) you want to paint.
I would go with a blue or a green.
A dark more bluish toned purple!
Green, go brighter for more pop, darker for less.
Have fun!
i'm in love with the blue idea--and babyfishmouth's screen name.
Robin's Egg Blue for sure - that would be beyond lovely!
Another vote for deep blue towards the purple tone.
Pale green, robin's-egg blue, bright ochre yellow, a high-gloss cream with black hardware, or even a bright coral or salmon, if you want to avoid the red-on-red but still want a warm tone without high contrast.
I have a post on "Colorful Front Doors"... The pinks and reds really stand out!
If you decide to choose a yellow, you'll want to invest in several samples and do a few "test runs" with posterboard. My professional painter friends all agree that yellows are the trickest to choose - nearly everyone is surprised when the perfect color in the can doesn't look quite so perfect on the wall/door!
I'm voting teal blue or apple green. Yellow's a little too cliche. Ooo, pink! Red's a little too common, too. At least in these parts (CNY).
I'd go with yellow...I live in a 1840's brick town home and we have a brown/ bronze entry way and we painted our front door Ben Moore "yellow raincoat" and it looks bright and cheery! We tried 5 different sample colors, too. And Yellow is not "cliche", I am the only person I know that has a yellow door.
Normally I would lean toward red, but I agree that it would not have the visual punch you are looking for.
I vote for Peacock Blue or Apple Green!
i love the purple-blue that people are suggesting. it would pop but not be too in-your-face bright.
also, babyfishmouth...love the name!! love that movie!!
I may be alone in this but what about a purple like the lavender (?) outside of your house? Beautiful house btw!
Your house already is pretty, and a lot of these suggestions sound great. I don't have a suggestion, just the request that you share an after photo when you change your front door's color. Good luck!
"eyedropper" the lowest portion of your upstairs window in the photo and that is the blue I think you should go with.
by the way - i think lavender will read mauve and will not pop much at all.
Green would look great with the natural colors of your building materials and the landscaping.
Kelly green or any dark blue.
Hi all,
I think the blue you are seeing in the upstairs window is the reflection of sky...
Thanks again for all the suggestions!
I will definitely post an AFTER pic ;)
Eric
Yellow? Teal? Light Blue? Lavender?
Those colors are fine for an MCM house, but they're NOT appropriate for a Tudor - unless you want to be the joke of the neighborhood...
Stick to deep colors that are appropriate to the style of the house: Barn Red, Dark Brown, Dark Green or even Black.
A greenish bronze (maybe BM's Lichen Green) with dark iron hardware.
I was going to say a slightly muted apple or kelly green, but I see many people have beaten me to it. I like the deep blue idea, too, or maybe even a stormy grey blue, like the color edgaroso noted in your window.
Green will definitly stand out the most against all that red.
@bepsi, your point is good.
I also agree that a lot of the suggested colors would come off as cartoonish in this context.
I love the idea of an inky blue-black. Something that would read as black, but on closer inspection would reveal just a hint of blue. And then I'd bring in some blue/purple toned blooming plants around your front entry to bring it out a bit.
Your brick and roof are brighter facade colors and so I believe you need a strong door color to offset the facade colors. See our new article on using Farrow and Ball paints for your front door. Our strong color solutions would be great for you.

I'd say some sort of green. My mom painted the front door teal once, and it looked surprisingly good!
I'm going against the grain here. I say a shade of ochre yellow.
A little deeper green than apple, I think. An alternative would be a rich salmon hue.
I vote for mustard or ochre.
Bepsf's point about staying true to the style of the house is a good one. At least you can paint over it if you change your mind!
I'd try a nice clear yellow-orange. Or peacock/turquoise. (And not worry that these are not Tudor colors. Unless you live in England, this is not a Tudor house -- only Tudor style. So make yourself happy!)
I dragged this into a program to edit to "try on" some of the color suggestions. I think I'm going with Cyndia in that the white or cream of the exterior is throwing me off. Also with your roof being a more pinkish red and your brick being on the orangish red side. So I got a little carried away, but if you do end up getting a new roof or whitewashing your brick in the future, then you might see something like this:

Then I went with the purply/bluish suggestion.
I'd go with the same shade of blue that you see glinting off the windows on the second floor.
Dutch Green (black green) - Peacock or a Robins Egg if the neighborhood is a litle quirky.
I suggest you paint the door with the same color creamy or white that you have in your front, that pops the door (because all around is dark) but it will not break with the composition of the front. I recommend you, if you have any image editor to put rectangules with different colors in the door, that's going to give you a better idea how it would look like.
Simple way to try on a color with nearly zero technology skills. Open the picture up in a PCs "Paint" program (it's still there! Look under "Accessories). Draw a rectangle over the door and fill it in with any color you want to try.
something light to stand out, white, cream, saffron yellow...so it's easy to see where the door is
lovely house
I agree with the folks who said to keep true to the house's Tudor style, go with Mustard or Green Apple, so it doesn't look overdone.
Peacock blue!
One of the houses around the corner from my parents' old house had a BRIGHT blue door and it looked fantastic.
I immediately think tangerine/orange. High gloss.
Beautiful house.
I can only picture it in a dark green colour, mossy bottle green if that is anything. Agree completely with bepsf.
I don't think blue or green will really POP. I am thinking yellow, and specifically, the yellow that is present in the bricks to the right of the door. There is a definite light yellow there, either in the bricks themselves, or in the mortar. Get as close to that color as possible; a light mellow yellow, not a mustard.
White - The would even out the white in the top of the building and will pop against the darker surrounding colours.
Bright Red would look nice and not out of place.
Gold foil!
Oh wow, what a beautiful house! I am so jealous!
If it were me, I would stick with something classic, but since you want something bright, I would say blue-violet.
I'm with Denmark on this -- a high gloss black door. Get a Dutch Door Kit from Fine Paints of Europe --

All the colours being suggested are on that chart (well, except lavender).

Is it just me, or is there a storm door in front of the entrance?
OOOH I definitely agree...Robin's Egg Blue. Bam!
I would go with a blue that matches the blue in the upper windows...that would be lovely.
Teal
Apple Green (the color of a Grannie Smith apple) would really pop with your other colors - it would also draw in and complement your landscaping. A LemonYellow would also work.
Goldenrod yellow.
I recently did an inspiration blog about the importance of making a statement with your front door, which includes lots of great brightly painted examples! You may find it helpful!

Mustard yellow.
Emerald green
a gorgeous farrow and ball blue that speaks to you. the color will feel english thereby making the choice unique and random. Green will look gorgeous too but will get lost in front yard folliage
