Naming toys is a little bit like naming pets: I just got a dog (hooray!) and named her Birdy. During a recent chat with a friend, she told me that her son had named his rocking horse Birdy (or Birdie?), too. Naming a toy animal (or a real animal) by another animal's name...well, we find that really funny. What amusing and endearing things have your kids named their toys over the years?

Years ago I had a boyfriend who named our dog "Katja", which is Dutch for "little cat"...
My 4-year old Daughter Recieved a Polar-bear stuffed animal at christmas time. She named it Holy-Poly.
My niece has a rocking horse, one of the amazing handmade British ones, that she calls Inky. Which is short for Incitatus, but my sister and I came up with that. He has a brass plate with his name engraved on it.
I have a brown stuffed bunny that was my favorite childhood toy that I named "Brownie". My friend's son has a small stuffed lamb that he named Lambie". I find it funny how almost all children seem to add "-ie"/"-y" to the end of an animal's name or the animal's physical attribute in order to give it a name.
I also had a grey cat once that we named "Stormy" because we'd had a big storm the night before we found him on the banks of the creek that ran through our property (we think someone threw him off the bridge into the creek to get rid of him :'( ), and he was a storm-cloud colored grey.
When my son was 4, he named a new stuffed animal horse "screaming lunchbox". I laughed all the way home from the store!
When I was small, our black cat had 3 black kittens, and my father named them "Martin", "Luther" and "King". A later black cat (our 18 year old) is named "Miss Lucy" -- the Lucifer connotation is no accident! -- and our pure white kitty is named "Miss Lilly".
My daughter is some sort of name channeler -- she looks at a toy, and proclaims the most unusual names. She named a (stuffed toy) fish "Valero" at 18 months, and her fist baby doll "Vinip". She also helped named our son "Viggo". Yes, she seems to have a thing for the letter "V".
My little girl has stuffed cats named "Soosy Doosy Doo" and "Orange Bookey." She named the (real) stray cat we adopted last year "Window." We also have a fish named "Chair."
Also, mschatelaine, all those names are amazing! Wish our girls could hang out.
When my son was two he named his stick pony Dricken and a stuffed bunny Brigid. He and Brigid rode Dricken all around the house and yard. Both names seem Celtic to me and at the time we lived in small town South Dakota.
What I find interesting is that even very young children create names that follow phonetic rules and really could be words in the English language. Just shows how much language they're absorbing.
my cousin's son named his stuffed animal "lollipop dancer"
My 4-year-old son has a stuffed chicken named Soup. And just today, he named a whole stable of toy horses: Black, Molly, Sally, Fergus, Fleece, Billy, Bob, Popsicle and Parmesan.
My son keeps naming his stuffed animals "Toady". There are at least 3 now and as they are not favorites, I'm never sure which one he's referring to when he asks about them. They are a cat a dog and a squirrel.
My son (17 months) is attached to a little blue bear with a beanie-bottom. He is ever so aptly named "UH-OH!" (exclamation mark always included) because he used to purposely drop him out of his crib when we were going through a sleep-training-ish time. We'd hear the beanie thud hit the laminate and go running in to give him back his cuddly friend. When we'd open the door he'd yell "Uh-oh!". Now whenever he wants his bed or to cuddle he will call out for Uh-oh.
My daughter (when she was about 9 months old) named her rocking horse "Diane". We have no idea where that came from, but it stuck.
My friends daughter named her stuffed bear Mounda. I think she was about 2 at the time. She is 8 now and still loves Mounda!
My son's doll is named "Baby Tickle." Yes, Baby was included in the name. Baby Tickle came wearing blue corduroy pants & hat, and was "he" until baby sister was born, whereupon Baby Tickle became "she."
My daughter has a Teddy Bear named "Ronnie" and another named "Homer". Turns out she was trying to say "Brown Bear" from "Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?" but we heard Ronnie and Homer.
i worked with a woman whose son (2) had a stick horse that he named "Judge Judy." i wonder how much daytime t.v. he watched.....
My 3 year old daughter has about 8 baby dolls. I would say that she is a little obsessed! The funny thing is she calls all of them her daughters.
one day I bought my son a small, stuffed giraffe. When he saw it, he came up with the name "Sparkle" from out of the blue! Somehow, it just suited the stuffed animal.. I am sure most parents will agree they haven't be able to think of a better name more suited to a particular toy once it has been christened ^^
There's a lovely book entitled "Dirty Wow Wow" about children's well-loved stuffed animals and the names given to them. Here's the site: http://www.dirtywowwow.com. I've given this book as a gift to new moms, but also to friends who are in need of a bit of cheering up--it's delightful.
My daughter has come up with some great ones-
an elephant named Vacuum Cleaner, 1st and 2nd baby dolls named Baby Baby Doll and Mama Baby Doll and a set of 3 identical babies named Doh, Single Doh and Poopie Doh. She's getting older and her naming skills are becoming less hysterical, but her little brother may out do her: He's named goldfish Bluey (after his favorite color, and yes, it soon went ka-bluey) and Twizly (after his favorite candy). He presented me with a rock yesterday that he named Foggy. And his cars are almost all named Baby and whatever color they are.
I love kids at this stage and the fun new ways they approach life!
Let's see...my two year old has a collection of stuffed "friends" named: "Nice", "Small", "Tiny", "Friend", and "Bep".
My childhood bear was called "Grizzly". Grizzly is a girl and still sits on a chair in the guestroom, wearing a dress. My mom says it was one of my first words. My son has 2 sleeping companions named his stuffed dog "Doggie" and his stuffed monkey "D-dog". We thought he was confused that it was a monkey but he assured us that D-dog is a monkey.
Our baby girl got a rocking horse when she was about 18 months old. She calls it "Bow-Bow" --- and now all horses are called that.
