Q: I love reading your site from London—especially the tips on making your own green cleaning products—and have a query for you. I have often wondered what the most hygienic way of cleaning the toilet is and wondered if you have any ideas?! I don't mean the actual bowl, but the seat, behind the seat and under it. I don't want to use a cloth which is then returned to its place, and neither is it very green to use toilet paper. Any ideas?

Editor: Ellie, we completely agree! We've tried a few different approaches in the past: 1) cleaning with a designated sponge that we keep separate from our other sink/bathtub sponge, and 2) using biodegradable and flushable wipes, like these from Method. Personally, we prefer the latter method, but it does feel more wasteful.
Readers, tell us what you do!

Um, why not use a cloth that you wash with the rest of your cleaning things (other cloths and sponges, gloves etc.), the bath mat and so on after you're done with your weekly routine? Personally, I have a sponge that is designated for only the toilet outside of the inner bowl area and I don't throw it into the washing machine after each use.
This is the same kind of stuff that comes out of little babies, so if you have ecological nappies, you put exactly the same kind of content in the washing machine when taking care of those...
Just use a cloth or rag. You can wash them after each use. I agree with @luftskibet, this same stuff washes off a baby, or you in the shower.
reuse cloths, toss them in the laundry :)
old washcloths, rags, etc. wash and throw in the laundry. the absorber chamois are great, too. they wipe surfaces down like a sponge but you can throw them in the washing machine to clean. http://bit.ly/98E0lS
