Q: We just moved into our home and want to paint the bedroom. I want it to be blue but have no clue as to what shade or if I should use an accent wall. We plan to use the Ikea white Malm series for our bedroom furniture.
We have this gray comforter and bedding set (second image below). I liked the paint color in the bedding set picture, but have been told that it doesn't "go" together. Please help! My husband and I are clueless as to design!

Shaw's Original Fir...
I'm curious; who told you that it didn't match and why did they say it didn't match?
If you like it, you like it and you should do what you like. I think the paint color in the example photo is nice. If you like it, why not do it?
I don't think paint should match your bedding just like purses don't have to match shoes. You can always change bedding easier than you can change your wall color. Pick a complementary color, but not one that matches exactly.
My personal preference is aqua or turquoise because blue with a touch of green is more interesting than plain blue.
I have a bedroom with vaulted ceilings similar to yours. The previous owners painted the wall behind the headboard blue and left everything else white. It's not bad but I'm curious if others have better ideas what to do
I can't decide if Rachele Biancalani is spamming or not, but AT, please take care of it.
If you have red pillows like the second picture, I'd keep the big red wall and use plain white or a cooler "greige" on the other walls. (I hate the word "greige," but it applies here.)
I actually really like the wall colour in the bedding photo. I might go with a touch lighter but I think it looks really modern with the grey bedding. I definitely would not leave the red wall!
I really like the wall color in the pic, too. It looks very similar to Palladian Blue by Benjamin Moore. I had it in my house for years, very cool and subtle.
I would go with a greenish turquoise as well, as it would work with the carpet. Then, if you're up for it paint the dressers an off-white.
I second what Pi said.
I use to have that color in my bedroom. I LOVED it! I feel very at peace surrounded by that blue color!
If you are insistent on keeping an accent wall, why not wallpaper? If it's out of the budget, I understand, but that could add some visual interest and help you pin down a design direction. Do you also have the red accent pillows or are you looking for accent colors as well?
white furniture and gray comforter? what DOESN'T match? just pick something you like. maybe go buy a couple tester paints and try them on the wall to help you decide. i think blue would look fantastic (i have a blue bedroom and i love how calming it is), but if neon green floats your boat, go for it!
Bedding is so transitory - Are you going to repaint the walls every time you get a new duvet???
Choose your windowcoverings/fabric first, then paint the walls in the color you want to coordinate - and lastly select bedding that will coordinate with all of the above.
Grey is so neutral that there are very few colors that don't work well with it! I like the color in the 2nd image, but might (personally) lean a little more green - Himalayan Mist or Soar by Behr are two examples. Then you could keep red accents if you wanted - or keep everything else crisp and white. Pale blues and aquas are so calming in a bedroom.
@bepsf - In general, I agree, though they've already selected their bedding so they're not starting from scratch.
Well white furniture goes with any colour walls. That shade of blue paint is a little light, maybe choose a shade darker and brighter. As for bedding, i think white, grey patterns or even fuchsia! See this for an idea: http://pinterest.com/pin/1421752/
The wall color does look good with the bedding but you need to add interest or else it would be too muted on the whole. You could add black-&-white patterns in pillows and/or tie-in the same or deeper shade of the wall blue color in pillows, pattern would help. It should look cohesive. Accessories is the easiest way and you can play around with it.
Thanks for all the suggestions (it was my question)! A family friend said that the shade of gray would not go with the blue in the picture b/c the shade has some green to it and the gray is more in the violet family, but I'm glad that some of you out there agree with it! Great point that this is not my end all be all comforter and I need to go with a color I like and will continue to like for a good long time. I do have the red accent pillows b/c they were on clearance, so I can live without them if needed. Thank you again!
