Q: I recently purchased my first condo, and while our furniture fits in nicely with the living room's layout, I am at a loss for how to fill up the large empty wall above our couch. We do plan to purchase a floor lamp for behind the end table - which I am also open to suggestions on. However, I cannot make up my mind as to what would look good on the wall... one large piece of art? If so, any suggestions for an affordable solution? Or should we try one of those "gallery walls?" Any decorating ideas are welcome.

Shaw's Original Fir...
A big colorful painting or photo would look great.
If you do a gallery wall, just make sure you don't go too small-scale and add some color!
frame collage of your best memories and travels.
Hi Amanda:
There are so many possibilities! Something affordable could be a nice poster (like from posters.com - my office was remodeled and they bought some very nice ones from them, some come framed, others not. They also sell some art And they have all types of prices). Pick up something you LIKE and pick a size that goes well with the big wall. You can also try something from Ikea, Ross, Home Goods. You can also use a big piece of fabric with a big design, cover a canvas with it and hang it on the wall. Even a nice carpet--if you have one. I once framed (myself) a silk shawl with a Picasso reproduction in blue and red colors--it looked great! See what you have at home and if you can use it. Especially chose some bright colors to bring life into the room and then get some throw pillows that have the soem of the colors in your art wall and put them on the furniture. For some DIY visit http://www.bhg.com/decorating/do-it-yourself/wall-art/ or http://www.realsimple.com/home-organizing/decorating/living-room/unexpected-decorating-ideas-00000000016267/index.html. Look around in the internet--you will find plenty of ideas! I am in the same process now.
Have a good decoration day!
I really like Manuko's idea of fabric. Your furniture seems like a nice neutral canvas and you could easily add pattern and color for big impact without spending a lot this way. You could even experiment with things you happen to have around your home (pretty fabric, small rugs, artwork from other places in your home just to get a sense of what it would look like). This seems like a fun task!
I would go with something large on the larger wall and perhaps two smaller pieces on the other wall. If it were me, I would want colorful pieces.
Check out fineartamerica.com and dailypainters.com. Fine Art America has a large selection of reasonably priced giclee prints in all sizes; you can purchase them on paper or canvas. You're sure to find something you like.
If you want original art, I highly recommend Daily Painters. Checking out local galleries is also a good idea.
Head out to the paint store and get several pints of the brightest colors you like and then to the crafts store for the biggest piece of foamcore available. Next step is to the back yard or parking lot with a drop cloth and a sense of adventure. Splash, smear, dribble, drool and hang. You can tack the foamcore to some 1x2's to keep it from warping.
I had a similar problem. I just moved into a new apartment with the typical all beige walls and carpet. I found some free wooden pallets and painted them bright colors, to add warmth and depth to the space. Total cost was approx. $30 for the paint.
I have decorative mirror on my wall.
Grab a bunch of different frames for cheap, and paint them all the same colour or a few different colours. Pop in the photos, drawings, prints, you like and hang them up. By tying together the frames by colour, it will all work together no matter the different sizes and styles.
Another vote for fabric. Big impact for small dollars - even expensive fabric makes cheap art. And the room could use some pattern and color.
You could get a yard and a half of a splendid Marimekko fabric (57 inches wide by 54 long) for $60 to $70.
I once had a large wall to fill, but not enough picture content, so I painted a big geometric pattern on the wall with latex paint (it was even a rental; I just painted over it when I moved). It was super cheap and a great statement "piece".
My favorite cheap art technique is to buy a frame from IKEA, and put in a piece of nice wrapping paper (the kind you buy in a single sheet, not roll from a nice stationary store). If you put maybe three of these in a row, don't be afraid to get big frames, with a different print in each one, behind the sofa it would look very nice. Choose prints that have the same color theme, even if everything else about them is different. Pick up that color with some new throw pillows too. Good luck!
(Space permitting, of course):
Pull the sofa away from the wall about 5 or 6 inches and place a long console table or shelf along the length of the back. Decorate it as you please or see fit. Then hang artwork above that. Something with a little more height in the corner next to the window would be nice, too.
Go with "chunkier" pieces of art to keep the wall cleaner, less cluttered looking.
Fortunately for me, I have several large paintings that are horizontal and vertical, so I can make them work in above furniture on large open walls.
1. Buy a couple of inexpensive IKEA foamboard prints and hang them.
2. Paint the wall a nice colour and/or reupholster the sectional.
3. Get the lamp.
4. Add some accents - throw, cushion shams (you have GOT to switch out the ones you have now), picture collage on top of the coffee table, decorative bowl on coffee table, etc.
5. Remove the IKEA prints and take a picture.
6. Post the picture on AT and ask what others would hang on that wall.
7. Choose the solution you like the most.
8. Give away the foamboard IKEA prints.
9. Implement your favorite wall art solution.
The idea of the IKEA prints is so you don't have to stare at a boring empty wall while in the process of executing the rest of the plan.
1. buy one big colorful piece of art
2. put some smaller (black&white) framed family photos around it
3. buy some cheap cushions in the 1 or 2 most dominant colors of the big art
we have the same problem here, white walls, white floor, white couch (we buyed it very cheap as it was used, so we didn't really had the choice of what color would be cool)
i hope we can paint our walls in spring, what will liven up our place too :)
I have a similar situation and have been looking for inspiration for the past six months on what I should put on the large plain wall behind our neutral sofa. I had thought about making my own world map, but wasnt completly sure about it.
However I have just today been insipred by Russell Smith's photography. Have a look at this!

Its so simple yet so bold and you can diy it.
Good luck and send AT an after picture so we can see your work.
I also was going to say fabric, attached to canvas. Actually, 2 pieces of canvas might be better than one giant one. Behind my (similar) sofa, I have two large prints of vintage Chicago transit posters but I'm thinking of updating once I find the right fabric.
A couple DIY projects; cheap & easy! (^_^)

Years ago when we were selling our home I hung a colorful 8x12 rug on a huge wall. We sold the house in 8 days with 4 parties bidding on it. We were told it was the rug that sold it. Play around with it, you can hang anything.
Lots of good suggestions already. I'd add: Hang shelves to hold books or whatever you like, or hang solid decorations like masks.
You need art my dear. Since you have such a clean palette, may I suggest you choose one artist, (Bukovnik is my personal love), and frame, or just mount on poster board for a much cheaper solution, as many large pieces in one artist that you can find. A room takes on a special aura when only one painter in displayed. Your room is so neutral, a burst of color in your art would be amazing, IMHO. Good Luck.
You could always make your own personalized big picture. Check out what I did here... http://www.homefoodandfamily.com/2011/08/cutting-up-big-picture.html
I love the console table idea. But then again, I'm obsessed with them.
Stretched fabric over a frame.
Frame a nice piece of handmade paper (Papersource is a good place to look).
